13+ hp at the wheels by the XS cold air intake?
well read through the import tuner the other nite and saw that it said the XS cold air intake adds max 13 hp (range is 8-13) to the wheels and that the exhaust system only adds 5+ hps.
this sounded very strange to me, never heard of a cold air intake adding 13 hps!! to the wheels!! did i miss something here?? and someone plz explain to me how this is true or not true, at a lost rite now. (u can find the article at www.importtuner.com) thx wrx0r

Seems pretty high, I dunno.. I'd trust a dyno chart from Shiv, Mark, or the Aussies, dunno about import tuner though. I mean, it's a magazine after all, they're only in business to sell stuff.

Wow...that's a pretty substantial gain from an intake. It'd be nice to see some numbers with different intakes but I don't know if that's going to happen... The exhaust is just catback so it's not surprising that it didn't yield all that great of gains.

maybe because they have a front mount XS intercooler ....and they are blowing "COLD" air into it........
that's what i think.......IMHO....... |

the intake cost $185 and in the import tuner there was a dyno chart showing the increasing in HP!!
thats crazy i think, never heard of any intake give more than 5 hps at most, but u never know, check it out, not sure if its true or not. also i dont think that they have a front mount intercooler, just a stock wrx with minor mods, such as intake and catback exhaust, there was something else but cant remember exactly what. wrx0r |

Here is the paragraph from the article
Is it possible????
Installing the XS filter system required very little modification. The unit we are testing is their prototype piece, but the production piece is identical to the prototype unit--in polished trim. It provided for a noticeable difference in power at the mid and top end of the graph. A gain of 8 to 13 hp was found, providing for a peak of 182.7 hp. |

I still don't understand how a a K&N filter can be shown to actually reduce HP (See Shiv's dyno plots). Cobb and APS basically say don't buy a CAI without a Unichip. Other people running CAI or Ram intakes getting CEL's all the time. But for some magic reason, XS shows a huge increase. I don't think this mod will make any real difference without proper engine management. If you'd ask me, sure, you might get an increase, but then the ecu would learn it's taking more air in, and promptly detune itself back to normal parameters. Anyone?

8-13 hp is still BS. A gain of 2 is more like it. Those advertised gains are usually advertised as a result of more than 1 modification. The Mustang crowd went through that stuff and still goes through it. People will add a set of high flow heads on the Mustang, then install a cold air induction system and say they got 20 hp. I doubt on the unmodified WRX there would be no difference between adding a K&N and removing the silencer and installing a $200 CAI.

I am also skeptical. Like said before, on the mustang you have a gain of 2-4 HP MAX on a stock vehicle. But who knows, maybe turbo vehicles respond better to the mods. If it is dyno proven on a stock vehicle, then I want to see the proof. I also think the only way to loose HP with the K&n is if you remove the air silencer. Otherwise, there is no way you are loosing power with it.

According to shiv's post (which I just reread), the K&N actually loses horsepower, the resonator mod also loses horsepower, combine the two, and your wasting your time. I took my K&N out this morning, just to try, and you know what, there is no difference. Sound maybe, but thats it. Bullocks, anyone want a K&N filter cheap?
-jb Edit: Here is Shiv's exact quote. The K&N drop-in filter actually reduced power by 1-2 wheel hp. The resonator mod really didn't do anything measurable except make lots of noise. Who you going to believe? The manufacturer who wants to sell these, or third party with absolutely no vested interest in the product. |

Mine (AEM) CAI added 12 to the wheels and 10lbs of tourqe. My wrx personaly was not dynoed but the guy before me had his dynoed, exact same setup. I just didnt want to pay $65 extra to have it dynoed.

jimb, where did you see shiv's quote? how can making a car breathe better make it loose power?

If anything it may lose low end by a tad bit, mine seemed to have gained a tad bit on low end but top end it gained a butt load.

Quote:
1) The filter was oversaturated with oil, so less air molecules are able to get pass the filter pleats. Therefore, the ECU doesn't supply as much fuel, resulting in less horsepower. 2) The ECU sees an increase in air flow, so it overcompensates by adding too much fuel. As a result, the motor runs too rich and won't be able to make as much horsepower. -- Richard http://www.whitetyphoon.com/impreza/ |

Hello,
Shiv's going to kill me for this... how can you say he has no interest or that he's a third party? He sells parts. He sells everything he dynos. He is, after all, Vishnu Performance. That being said, he does do a very good job of dyno'ing everything Oh, and remember on the 2.5RS when Shiv got 15 hp from an intake? He posted here and in Sport Compact Car. It's entirely possible to get huge results from an intake if the stock setup is a restriction and the intake is well designed. So far, most testing is showing that a turbo-back exhaust is worth a lot, while a cat-back is not worth as much. By "no vested interest", I mean he's not the manufacturer, nor a paid spokesman there of. Sure, he can sell 'em I suppose, but I think he's smart enough to realize what's worthwhile in a given application or not (not like I'm anyone to decide that anyway). If it works, all the more power to everyone, if not, toss it aside and move on. I'm sure everyone who has a K&N or other intake already is kind of po'ed because they shelled out big cash, and thought they saw big gains, but in reality, they gained nothing. Psychology is a bitch, the placebo effect is reaaaal bad, especially when you install parts yourself.
