Default Can someone school me on the Mazda 13B Turbo Motor?

I would like to start a project in September using a 13B Motor. The motor needs to be a turbo model and fuel injected, so that narrows the information down for me. The motor will be placed in another car so i am only concerned about the motor itself. Can someone answer the following questions for me:

Which models or serial numbers are the best ones to use?

What are the differences in the motors?

What are the capabilities of each of the motors?

How can you build them for about 350-400 Wheel hp?

What are the major problems with them and why do they fail?

How much does the motor weigh?

Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think 13B's only came in the 3rd gen which means they are all turbo and fuel injected. I have 3 RX7 books in the bathroom but I think it's nappy nap time

no, they're not all 13B

there was a 12A used from 79 until 84, I think. Then for the last year of the 1st gen, they put a non-turbo 13B in it.

Then in 86, the single-turbo 13B came around, along with a better tuned NA. Then again in 88, they retuned both engines, giving more power...which remained the same until the 93TT.

I just don't know the serial numbers...

A stock TT RX7 engine is good place to start. To get the most power you'll want to get a proper port job done. The engines respond very well to turbocharging, but are very sensative to detonation. You can easily blow a seal.

whats the difference in the insides of the single and twin turbo motors. basically when i get the motor i will replace all of the seals and gaskets, but what else would i need to do. i will be making everything for it. i will be using a garrett turbo and a stand alone engine managment. if the internals of the motors are the same i will just go with the older version and put my own stuff on it.

there isn't much to change inside. The rotors are all made the same. Just make sure you put 3mm apex seals on there, the 2mm stock seals are the ones that blow out easily.

Then by boring out the ports (namely the exhaust), you will pick up a bunch of power.

Dont forget to change all the vacuum hoses and upgrade the cooling system with a new better aluminum radiator. That along with changing all the seals and gaskets should get you going with a 'reliable' rotary

reliable and FI rotary usually dont go well, but hey who cares, it's only a project car right?

the 1st gen had a turbo in forign markets...

thats why the 2nd gen was called the turbo II... the second 13b to have a turbo.

the 3rd gen had twin sequential turbos, but i forget what the entire engine code was to designate between the turbo2 and the 3rd gen.

There is the 20b which has three rotors. I believe people stick with the 13b motor for the balance.

WRONG!!11~
The 12A was used in all US 1st-gen years, 79-85, in the S, GS, and GSL(LSD, Rear discs, fully optioned) models. The fuel injected 13B came for the 1984 model year, in the flagship GSL-SE model, which was around for the remaining two years of the 1st gen.

meh, whatever, I was close.

The 13B was only in the last years... and yeah, only for certain models.

Regardless, I'll be in an 87GXL with 50,000 miles within 3 weeks
