Clunking sound when shifting into second high rpm!!?
Starting from a dead stop. I have to accelerate to at least 5k in first gear. When I then shift into second as the shifter slides into place I hear several Clunking sounds eminating from the middle front of my car. I could not get it to happen with any other gear, but then I don't have a lot of places around here I can go that fast. I was able to repeat it a couple of times. It doesn't sound like grinding though (sigh...I know what that sounds like). The car only has 23k miles 2003 WRX MT. I have the usual intake, exhaust, setup. I still have the stock clutch, which I can feel slipping at times. I also have the Perrin short shift adapter, I was wondering if maybe I'm chomping second or something. I would like to hear that it is a result of my clutch slipping, and not my tranny or diff's going out on me... anyone got any ideas? anything would be appreciated.

Shift slower into second. It sounds like you are trying to shift from first into second in .000574 seconds al a Shirley "Cha-Cha" Muldowny. AWD transmissions are NOT like any other car you've ever driven, they have to be shifted slowly. What you are hearing is your differential and/or tranny thumping the underside of your vehicle. That thump is bad ju-ju for your gears.

Agreed; shift slower. Pause for a bit in neutral before going into 2nd and see if that helps.

I had a feeling that was my problem... This is my first Manual Tranny so I don't have anything else to compare it too. Thank you both for the helpful info!!

When is this "clunk" occuring? While you're sliding it into 2nd? Is "clunk" the right word? I know you'll get a clunk or thud when you let out the clutch and you're a little off with the rpms. You'll send a little power surge through the drivetrain, instantly take up any slack, and make a thunk sound. I'm not sure if this is what you mean. If it's while going into gear, that's different. Is the shifter vibrating like it's trying to catch something? When does this clunk occur? I guess you just need to be more specific. Some noises are normal. Some aren't. Every tranny is different in feel and behavior.

You need to use the clutch more. I was doing the same thing when I got my 5speed wrx.
You can still shift 'fast' just be sure to release the clutch slower...dont drop it or else you will get the thud. Same with downshifting |

Yes the surge was something I noticed... when I would put it into second at highRPM it would surge... when I would take it out and the surging sound would go away... I never released the clutch though... The clunking happends (3-4 clunk sounds) as the shifter is sliding into second at high RPM (yes I was forcing it... wont do it again!). I also adjusted my shortshifter down 1mm which should help me a little. Last edited by ThrawlWRX; 05-26-2005 at 06:42 PM. Reason: iamsosmart.S.M.A.R.T. |

I sometimes wonder: what's the point of a short shifter if you can't shift the tranny quickly to begin with.....

So, you have the clutch pedal pressed down while this "clunk" occurs?
3rd gear high rpm, press clutch, shift hard to 4th, "clunk," goes in 4th, let up clutch pedal and engage gear. Is this it? Are you describing the shifter feel/noise? When forcing it, you'll get some vibrations and some noise when it's trying to catch a gear. It's not a clunk though. I've never experienced a "clunk" while I've had the clutch pressed down, only when I let up and engage the gear a little too quickly. |
