05 WRX eg33 swap
So after blowing 2 engines in one year. First from a broken piston and the second from a broken rod. I have decided to do an eg33 swap. I am very disappointed with a particular machine shop in St. Pete, fl. But instead of griping over things I can not control. I have decided to drop the big block in this thing.( 2.0 was very anemic anyways).
So I just bought an 92 eg33 with 69k on it for $224 in Brandon, fl. And the only issue so far is the missing starter bolt hole that I encountered while fitting the engine in the car. I will have some pictures of soon. Oh yea I am parting out the ej205 if anyone is interested in anything. The Recipient Last edited by lostinthesauce83; 12-27-2011 at 04:34 PM. Reason: update |

Last week I pulled out the ej205. And what did i find? Well take a look.
If you look closely you can see two holes punched right through the block. |

I think i figured out the issue with the missing starter bolt hole. I was hoping someone has and SVX starter that they could take measurements from and post them for me. I measured a distance of 7" on the eg33 itself. Here is a pic of what i am talking about.

I can try to remember to go measure... But I don't like looking at my SVX much these days... Makes me sad. :-/

I Think I figured it out. There is a difference is in the transmission housing. But the starters appear the same.

dont worry about the starter, use the starter from the wrx and tap threads into the hole on the trans
do NOT put a single td04 on an eg33. |

youre feeding 3.3l of displacement at a turbo that has issues dispelling the output of a 2.0l
you can do it, but it will fail. I suspect there would be massive reversion |

This exactly what would happen. A TD04 is fine and dandy on a 2.0l with 8:1 compression but on a 10:1 3.3... It'll hit peak boost then have nothing left to do. TD04 is way too small. If you did two that would be one thing but a single isn't gonna cut it.

With the starter, you mean to tap the hole in the transmission, then drill out the hole on the starter to accommodate the larger bolt?
Really? td04 seem a little too laggy for the 2.0l and I never had any over boost issues, even with 272 cams. But if it does fail I have an Holset HE351VE sitting in my bed room. Last edited by lostinthesauce83; 01-02-2012 at 08:31 AM. |

Isn't a waste gate designed to prevent over boosting? Anyways if I blow the turbo Im not loosing much.

For the starter you can also stick the bolt through the hole backwards, and use it as a stud. You have to flatten the head of the bolt a little to clear the engine, but this works great. Do you already have the engine in the car? If thats the case you will need to tap the hole in the trans, thats going to be difficult to do properly with it in the car.

Any updates on this? also, what did you do for the starter bolt?
(Personally I wouldn't use the flipped bolt, you'd probably have to remove the motor to replace the starter if it ever failed) |

i'm almost done swapping an eg33 into my 2006 2.5i
i tapped the bellhousing and enlarged the bolt hole on the starter. not sure of the differences between an 06 2.5i and a 05 wrx but i also had to A) switch back to cable throttle B) convert back to a return style fuel system C) tap into the 2.5i engine bulkhead harness since the ecu uses an engine ground to ground the ecu itself - i had issues with the 2.5i ecu not turning itself on when the key was on D) only 2 wires have to be spliced between the 2 ecus (back up power and starter signal) E) run the fuel pump off its own relay at 100% duty cycle since the EG33 computer wont run the fuel pump controller F) i used the stock rad, moved it directly infront of the rad support, had to modify the rad support, bumper bar, headlight brackets, and switch to hood pins. G) the 2.5i low pressure powersteering hose works on the svx pump, but i had to have new fittings crimped on to my 2.5i hose to fit the svx pump on the high pressure line H) had to use the svx alternator, the 2.5i alternator will not fit the svx bracket. so i had to splice the connector into the 2.5i harness. I) use the impreza motor mounts |

No real updates. I have been real busy with school at the moment and been moving to my new house slowly. I have gathered the money to continue the project. So I have purchased a stand alone ecu, a MSIII. This weekend when I take my kids to my parents I plan on fitting the engine and installing the new timing cover and belt. What did you do for the radiator? I plan on notching the rad support so I can utilize the factory radiator. My plan is to get custom ac lines made. It gets pretty hot down here in the summer especially with a black car.

Was the engine mounted to the tranny in this pic? By looking at the picture my 05 has a little more room for fitment.

as you can see, just to put the motor in with the tranny still in the car, the whole upper rad support had to be cut out, then re welded back in

also how did you line up the hole for the starter bolt? did you just bolt the engine to the tranny, then pick a drill bit that fits the hole then tap. Or was that done with the tranny outside the vehicle? Seeing your car has got me excited to work again. I hope I get a chance this weekend. Driving the gf's minivan is getting lame.

motor wasnt fully in, the picture was just to demonstrate how long the motor is, when getting the bottom studs in place the motor was pushed right through the rad support.
while the motor was out, i just tapped the transmission, then enlarged the hole in the starter, and got a bolt that went through the starter, and about 3/4 of the way into the transmission |
