Yeah, the 215 would have a slightly shorter radius and therefor register a faster speed.

Would 225/45r17 be too wide for winter tires?
Anyone have real world experience with this tire size for a winter set? Impressions? Thanks |

I have a 2011 wrx and find this quite overwhelming. Im lookin for a second set of wheels for winter tires. Is it cheaper to buy a used set of older model wrx wheels or to get Steelies from tire rack. Which model wrx wheels should I be looking for. Is there any issue with running a winter tire, only when it snows with out the tire pressure sensor? These are some of the questions I have

Anyone care to comment on Pirelli P4 Four Seasons for an all-season? The OEM Bridgestones are finished (225/55/17, with 50k on the car I'm glad to see them go). I have a Jeep background, and am drawn to the Yokohama Geolandars (215/60), but the Pirellis at OEM size look like they might handle ski trips better while being more competent on the road the rest of the year. I can occasionally get work to send me out on mud/dirt/gravel roads/trails (land surveying) so the Geos might be handy there. I'm not buying winter/snow tires in Maryland, but don't want to regret my tires if we get a good winter again.

Curious, are winter tires supposed to make a lot more noise? I know they're so much softer, especially compared to my sport tires. I just keep getting paranoid every time I hear whining noises.

Winter tires are usually louder than summer or all seasons. What tires do you have?

I'm in the process of getting a winter setup for my 12 WRX.
I just bought a set of 225/45/17 snow tires, and to my understanding, they'll fit on the stock 2012 17x8 rims... not ideal, but they'll fit. Does anybody have a picture of this? Will they look goofy with the smaller profile (vs. 235/45)? My next option is getting a set of winter rims so I don't have to mount/dismount tires 2x a year. Would 17x7.5 look tucked on the widebody 2012? Will a 3 or 5mm spacer fix this, and will that put any undue wear on the wheel bearings/etc? Thanks in advance. |

In all the other performance tests, the 225 was slightly better, or slightly worse, than the 205 |

Yeah 225/45R17 is fine. I'm running 235/45R17 Conti EWC to more closely match the OE / spare diameter of my 2010 STI. (215/50R17 would be ideal for me but the selection in that size is extremely limited.) Would a little thinner be better in the snow and ice? Probably, but EWC's on an STI is so good as is that it really doesn't matter.

My stock tire size is 215/45/17, but if I were to go with the Dunlops, I would have to go with 225/45/17. I do drive to the Poconos frequently for snowboarding, but most of my driving will be on main roads and highway. |

As for dry/wet conditions... they obviously fail in comparison but thats not what i bought them for. I decided it was worth the sacrifice to loose the performance in those conditions for the ability to get to the mountains (i ski a lot) ..oh an boy they are loud when its wet |

looking for some input.
I found some scion rims that look like they'll fit my 2011 wrx hatch. they are 16x6, 5x100 with a 39.5 offset. I was thinking either general altimax, conti EWC, or blizzak ws70's in a 205/60. The other thing is that the tires will only be thrown on when traveling to the snow, but they will mostly see dry roads, so i'd like something that possible has longer thread life. either of those tires better than the other for me, or any other recommendations? Big thanks to Luke at TireRack. I called him today and asked for recommended tires for my area - Parkersburg, West Virginia, and for my car, a 2011 STI Limited.
We came up with 235/45R-17 Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 XL tires with the 17x8 MSW Type 14 Silver wheels so I don't jack up my alloys. Also went ahead and paid for the TPMS sensors since I am a TPMS state. He couldn't have made it easier. good talking with you earlier ... we'll get things put together and shipped out ASAP Last edited by Luke@tirerack; 12-19-2011 at 05:10 PM. |

Looking to get a set of winter tires for my '12 WRX, I already have 16" steelies from our old toyota matrix. The problem comes to picking the tires. Heres the deal: I live in southern california where it never snows. Just get a few good rain storms in the winter, but I snowboard a lot, usually Mammoth, which is 300 miles away. With little to no snow for about a solid 260 miles of that. Or occasionally big bear which has windy roads and can be dumping snow randomly. for the last 15 miles of the 60-70 mile trip.
I was considering getting the General Altimax Arctic (was also recommended to check out Nokian by my neighbor) in the 205/55/16 size but was not sure on the wear if driving them on dry pavement for 520 miles out of the 600 miles round trip I will be driving. Granted they would only be on when I go boarding, which is about 15-20 times a year. With this would I be better off with something like the DWS? I know people say all seasons are no seasons but most of the driving will be on dry/wet pavement. Thanks in advanced. |

Gotta do what ya gotta do! maybe like 10x to Mammoth and about 10x to the closer resorts (usually filled with donkeys and the roads usually suck)
