Was looking at Blizzak WS-60 or LM-25. Need a recommendation on whether to go with 16" or 15" also. Thanks, Sam the LM25 will deal with the road trips much better so, I would go with them with that said you will need to go with 16's to get the LM25 Last edited by Luke@tirerack; 12-02-2008 at 05:44 PM. |

^^Go with 15 if possible. 16 is OK though.

thanks luke. i got my tires the very next day after ordering them, super quick and a great price. had them shipped to a local installer and were on my car that day.
worked great in the snow and not bad on dry pavement. (sorry, no snow pics, but these were on my way to the snow ) |

would 235/45/18 at 26.3" be too tall? trying to use the stock rims for winter. also 08 STi If they would fit, realistically how much of a snow performance hit would this size be over a 235/45/17, if any? Gotta make a decision SOON Thanks ideally you want to be no taller than 25.7" but, I do know of a couple people running the 225/45-18 which is 26.0" tall. I would not go any taller than that and I can not even guarantee that size on all '08's as there are typically minor variations between cars even of the same model Last edited by Luke@tirerack; 12-04-2008 at 12:52 PM. the ones i rock are $1000 for a set. its just money , when your dead in a ditch you'll wished you weren't so cheap. i run hakapelita 4 studded nokians . i wanna get the 5's so bad they are supposed to be better in slush which the 4's are not so good with. be safe everyone. http://www.nokiantyres.com/ |

Just thought id chime in on my new ones. Just got Altimax Arctics and must say... wow. Had some good all seasons before but a couple were getting bad and the first storm it slid easy, and didnt grip "great" (like it should). Now its amazing i had a blast the first fall, felt like on dry pavement almost. Got the hook up from Matt at Don Miller so go see him if your in the Madison area. Great price, Great product.

year: 2004
make: Subaru model: WRX location: Madison, WI I put less than 4k a year on my WRX and I have the luxury of almost never having to take it out of the garage during winter. So I've managed the past 4 years with just a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GDS3s on it. (Awesome summer-only tires BTW.) However last year's winter storms in Madison were unreal and the excitement generated here (along with the fact that I haven't spent any real money on the car in almost a year now) prompted me to order a tire & wheel package yesterday (Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D on the Sport Edition F9 wheels). Now I'll have to take it out a couple of times just to see how they do. If they're half as good as people are saying, I'll probably order a set for our minivan as well. P.S. It's a sad day when the only thing left I could think of to "mod" on the WRX was to get a set of snow tires for it. This thread should be banned (j/k - thanks Luke ) order number? ==> 7114437 Last edited by Over-Draft; 12-05-2008 at 10:00 AM. |

make: Subaru model: WRX sedan location: Watertown, MA (10 min outside Boston) tires only or winter package: Tires only I have stock rims and the car is lowered 1" in the front and 3/4" in the rear. I'm looking for something that will also provide decent dry traction since in MA we can have long periods of dry between snow, or of course, we could just get dumped on week after week You just never know. I would run the X-ice XI2 in the 215/45-17 if it was my call to make Last edited by Luke@tirerack; 12-04-2008 at 01:31 PM. |

Bacon: Dunlop 3Ds are ideal for eastern MA IMO. Speaking of which, mine came today. My only (minor) complaint is that they were made in late 2007 which means they are already a year old. Not unusual though I guess.
not uncommon and not really an issue as Dunlop does store tires correctly Last edited by Luke@tirerack; 12-04-2008 at 01:02 PM. |

Luke,
Thanks for your input. I ended up going with the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D on 16's, just to many great reviews for that tire. I will see on next winter on the X-Ice XI2 if I am not happy with the dunlop's. Order Number 7123990 don't forget to hit the review after you log some miles Last edited by Luke@tirerack; 12-04-2008 at 01:10 PM. |

Luke,
I noticed the Dunlop Winter sport 3d's are on "closeout" special on tire rack.....are they being discontinued?? I've ran these last year and very happy, I'm driving alot of miles for work and don't think they are going to last through the whole winter season. And will probably order another set soon. not discontinued but when we run out they are gone until next winter Last edited by Luke@tirerack; 12-04-2008 at 01:19 PM. |

^^I asked the same thing. The tire is not being discontinued but JB at Tire Rack said they will not be getting any more this year after stock on hand is gone.

wrx Baltimore, MD 225-45-17 All season Well i needed tires anyway so i went with the new BFG Gforce Super Sport A/S this tire rocks 400 treadwear, AA traction, A temp and a killer tread pattern. there even rated for light snow..and in a subaru that means med. to heavy right LOL Nice an quite even a high speeds.. but who could hear tires over the mirrors howling dry grip feels great I can now find limitations of the car not the tires Ill do a wet and snow update later when i find some MR tire price installed was 151.00 a tire. (sucks because i used to install and sell tires) but no more connections for good deals lol |

Quick question Luke,
When I go for tire choices it gives me the alternate (235/40/18). Is that guaranteed to fit in my wells? Or is it safe keeping to just go for 245/40/18. Looks to be a better deal on my wallet to go for the 235/40 tires. 235/40-18 will work fine. it is a little narrower and a little shorter than the 245 but, not so much it causes problems. make: Subaru model: WRX/STI location: Fort Collins, CO tires only or winter package: tires only (235/40/18) Last winter I had a set of the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D and thought they were great. Just for general around town driving or to the airport so needs to be good for highway speeds occasionally too. I dont plan on driving up to the mountains and we dont get too much snow here. Price is of concern too. I am stuck with that size tire because of the fit and my rims (18x9). Thank you 225/40-18 will fit a 9" wheel but it does look rather narrow I would probalby go with the 235/40 myself if you are forced to run the 18x9's Last edited by Luke@tirerack; 12-05-2008 at 08:07 AM. |

make: Subaru model: Baja turbo location: IA winter package 225/60R16 stock Bridgestone’s I have one of Subaru’s orphan that they abandon the Turbo Baja. I am looking for some winter tires. I would like to get some studded ones. I like the reviews of the General Altimax Arctic. I do not need to drive the truck to work (only 24,000 total miles so far) but I want something that can be driven in the worst condition. (Wet ice) My big question is what size would be best the 215/65R16 or can I down size to a 15” If I order another set of summer tires do you get a break on shipping? Thanks |

Hey Luke,
Just wanted to say thanks - I'm the "Lee" you talked to (2005 Legacy and WRX sedans) this afternoon, and just purchased a set of 215/50/17 Michelin Xi2s, and chatted for a second about your last name/relatives in Cleveland. I used the NASIOC link, and entered your name, as well as a description of the rims I'm mounting to 17x7 stockers for the '05 Legacy GT, which I will then cross-fit to my wife's WRX. Thanks again for your help, and the cheerful call. This is my second set from TireRack, and I'm sure I'll be back, both to the TR as well as to you, for more. ---- Oh, and yeah, I'd have gotten 205, instead, but your Closeout deals two weeks ago, when I didn't yet have the cash, really closed-out that particular sizing, for the Xi-2s!
