There is also the new blizzak lm-32 plus the Dunlop 3d and 4d which have a V speed rating but might sacrifice some traction in poor conditions.
i don't mind maintaining 36f/35r as i find myself on interstate travel between BOS-NYC couple times a month...looking to take the car up to the mountain to snowboard a few times this season too. can you elaborate on working well? im pushing 80-90 on the interstate...am i going to feel less in control because of these tires?

also, tirerack has dunlop wintersport M3s at 215/45R17. also rated very well in terms of wet and snow traction but have a higher speed rating. slightly narrower by 10mm. should i consider these instead of blizzaks?

wheel in question btw is rota tarmac3s 17x7.5 +48.

M3 are quite old design. 10+ years if I am not mistaken.
This winter looks like bad time to buy performance winters in the USA.

eh, not worried about design so much, so long as it gets the job done and the tire itself isn't 10 yrs old lol.

this winter could show more snow, idk. at the same time its gonna be 55 on mon/tues in nyc. and that'll be dec...

am i going to feel a difference size wise between 215 and 225 tho? online tire calculator says the 215 will run slightly slower...

Anyway the Sti comes with 18" rims and I must make the decision of buying 17" rims to fit my existing set of winter tires(and TPM's or does everybody drive around with the light on all winter??) or sell them(a pain in the ass) and buy a set of new 18" winter tires.

It is my understanding that the 17" rims are better in the snow. If that is incorrect please let me know!

If i stick with the tires I have and buy rims, how does that affect the speedomoter and overall drivetrain to drive on different size tires/rims. Is this tire size(225/45-17 the correct sizing for (down)sizing?

I know that was a lot, but I trust in all of your expertise!
Buy 17" dedicated winters u will not like the price of 18" winter tires and also it not the diameter that makes the difference its the width. Going with a 225/45/17 would be optimal and going with performance winter or straight winter tire is all up to your preference. Plus will give u more wheel well clearance to allow more room for buildup of snow and ice hope this helps.

Another V speed rated tire to consider (in 225/45-17) is the Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II

You need to stay within 3% of the original tire diameter as a general rule so it wont affect your speedometer/odometer as much. I decided to go with 235/45/17 as the winter tire I wanted didnt have it in 225/50/17 which are the 2 closest in size to the stock 245/40/18

Has anyone tried running Dunlop 3Ds with the tread rotation reversed? I had mine put back on recently and the tire shop recommended the reverse rotation because of mild cupping from last spring. So far I have noticed a decent amount of hydroplaning in standing water and not much grip in snow and ice. Probably going to have them swapped back to normal rotation.

If they're directional tires your tire shop is now liable if something were to happen so another words change them back and only rotate front to back not diagonal. Then find a new tire shop to deal with down the road as they r morons.

Edit: Pls read tire FAQ or go to TIRE RACK'S site and search as why u get certain tire wear as this will be very helpful in preventing uneven or cupping of your tires.

I have a 2012 Subaru Impreza Sport Premium and I'm planning on buying from Craigslist a set of 4 Winter tires.

The current size of my tires are 17x7" 205/50R17. The tires that I'm trying to buy are Blizzaks 215/60R16.

Quick! I need to know if they will fit and if I would have an issue with the rubbing against my car since here in NYC there are a lot of potholes.

Thanks!

The 16" Blizzaks I'm getting are on their own rims so I'm not going to put the 16" inch tires on my 17" rim.

Try to find 195/60/R16. Common size and much cheaper. But you need 16" wheels to mount them. Beauty of this size is that circumference of tire goes from 78.762" to 79.208" (0.565% speedometer error) which is nothing.

Found an interesting article on Tire Rack's site about testing directional tires mounted "incorrectly". They concluded it made very little difference in dry and wet conditions which way the tires were mounted. My guess is the mild cupping is from driving the winters hard in warm weather last spring. The summers that came off the car this fall are wearing very well even though they saw two hard track days. The shop I use is a Tire Rack recommended installer that has been in business for over 40 years, they are definitely not morons. That all being said I am probably going to have them switch the rotation back to normal, which they offered to do free of charge if I didn't like the performance.

In that case they will fit but speedometer error will be greater than 4%. Your real speed will be faster than what speedometer shows. 4 mph difference going 60MPH and 6mph going 100 MPH. Not saying you will go that fast just pointing out error rate. I run 225/45/17 on my car and error rate is less than 1%. Same with 195/60/16 under 1%

Question for the experts, I put my Wintersport 3ds on close to a month ago, and of course we have been seeing crazy warm weather. It's been 50s and 60s all this week and looks to continue. Am I doing more harm than good to my new tires? Should I switch back to summers for now?

I did the same thing when I first got mine. Just don't drive like a nut. Switching back to your other tires now just to put the winters back on is really just a waste of time.

I know this has probably been covered, but I didnt have much luck searching the thread and dont really have the luxury of time needed to read all 132 pages soooo, found a great deal on blizzak ws70 tires in 235/50/17. I know stock on my wrx is 235/45/17, but I wouldnt mind having a little extra height to offset rough winter roads. Will I have any fitment/clearance issues on a 2013 wrx? What about speedo issues/how much slower will it really read?

Are any of you generally running your winter compound tires several PSI higher than what the door plaque states?

I had a similar harrowing experience a week ago on my OEM summers in the wet and cold weather. Mounted my Wintersport 3D tires today, but the daytime temps are still in the 50s which is annoying.

Assuming you made an error and your stock size is 225/45/17 you will raise your car height by 0.64". Also tire circumference will change from 78.453" to 82.473". So 5.124% speedometer error. When your speedometer shows you are traveling at 60MPH you will be actually going 63MPH. At 100MPH error will grow to 105MPH.

U did say u were hydroplaning were u not, so lets say u spun out and crippled someone. That someone is going to sue whether it is u or tire rack. It is liability that I was expressing and if tire rack didn't give u a receipt than most likely that person is going to sue u.

Remember here that tire rack I think is a franchise so anybody can obtain the name and doesn't mean they r going to adhere to their policies and pretty sure corporate heads would not allow for them to instal directional tires backwards lol.

As for the cupping it is obviously the tire itself. Either from a slipped belt, developing hot spots from a bent wheel, beating on them...etc.

Thank you von Wachtstain, 5% error seems reasonable to me, especially given the addition protection from pothole/frost heave damage without having to buy -1 rim size. As far as stock sizing is concerned, I did mean to say 235/45/17, that is what came on my '13 WRX. I believe I've read somewhere that I shouldn't have any clearance issues with the 235/50/17 though, right?

My bad. Going from 235/45 to 235/50 is only 3.6%. I think I've read somewhere that error can't be more than 4% else you risk your brakes failing. I think I would look to 205/50/17 as my size if I were you. Supposedly narrower tire is better is snow.

I agree that a more narrow tire is arguably better in the snow, but I found a good deal on a like new used set of 235 width ws70. I'm going to grab them. Thanks for the help!

All this speed error is academic if tires do not fit the car.
Go to Bridgestone or tirerack page and compare the dimensions of current tire with new one.
Tell us (you do not expect us to do everything for you) what is the delta. It may or may not fit.
