Default 03 USDM EJ20 -> 97 JDM EJ20 swap

my motor in my 03 took a crap and it isnt under warantee. I can get a 97 EJ20 longblock for a good price, but i was wondering whats involved, is it a bolt in/use stock harness affair, or due to the age difference is there different wiring that needs to be done? also, will this work inconjunction with the 03 ECU?

thanks

Two completely different engines. Don't bother. If you were getting a V7 or V8 I would say yes but dropping in a 7 year old engine is not the best idea.

Actually,
the '97 to '99 EJ20K engines are the best bang for the buck you can find. They were rated at 276hp in Japan and use the same block and head cores as the STi engines of that generation. The block it semi-closed deck and the heads are the big port variety that flow way better than USDM heads. One of the reasons for the change to using EJ205's(what was previously the EJ20 export market engine) in Japan for regular WRX's and EJ207's for Sti's was because guys with plain jane WRX's could easily get STi level power with a bigger turbo and a handful of bolt ons. That '97 engine is a superior engine to the one you blew up, and would be a worthy replacement for it.

Putting it in would be identical to replacing the EJ205 that you blew up. Just switch your wiring harness and sensors over to the EJ20K and bolt it in. Just make sure it is in fact an EJ20K and not an engine from Australia or some other export market...

I
guess you would need to swap over the 205 intake manafold .. to the 20k long block the K manafold is differnt your intercooler won't fit

the cam and crank sensors are the same ...
you will still have proublems with the fuel map
and the coil on plug won't bolt on

The EJ20K's dont' have coil on plug. In '97 when they redesigned the intake to run under the manifold, they also switched to the coil pack with wasted spark. And if he is getting a long block, he should be getting both the manifold and the TMIC from the K...

right.. but your missing the fact that he has 205 wireing ..

the simplest path is to make it run is with 205 wireing+205 sensors .. and probbaly 205 heads..

marks: .. from the vf-22 .. which is the largest turbo subaru has ever put on a car

Default Heads and coil on plug

The older engine might have heads that will recieve the coil on plug setup. I know my MY97 DOHC 2.5 heads have the bolt holes to recieve them for some random reason. Just thought I would throw this out there. Also a custom ECU reflash would probably be in order to address some of the issue you would run into with a differant engine than the ECU. IE no tumble vavles.
