VDC and Hill start assist warning lights on
I just swapped out the cruise switch on my 08 WRX for a cruise + steering wheel audio version from the premium. The cruise and audio controls work perfectly, but now two lights on my dashboard have turned on.. one the "Vehicle Dynamics Control warning light" (not the one that lights up when you turn off traction control manually) and the other is the "Hill start assist warning light." This mod required removing the airbag and steering wheel to swap out the control pods. In another thread someone said you can break the VDC sensor by doing this, but I don't believe that.. I was extremely careful, and there's no way something broke. Would the vdc system need a reset perhaps?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use secret handshake to find out what ABS/VDC trouble code is.

C0071 is steering angle sensor
C0042 is Power Supply Voltage Failure for the VDC module. Did you disconnect the batter while you swapped out the steering wheel? You can try reseting the codes by disconnecting the battery, if the code 71 comes back you are going to have to take it to the dealer they can try re-calibrating the sensor. Hrm I really don't want to go to the dealer. The car is nearly brand new, two weeks at most.. would they know that this is something I've caused or would I be looking at warranty work?

I went to the dealer. I told them a couple lights had come on my dashboard. They replaced the steering wheel angle sensor under warranty... good luck!

Codes
I have a similar problem with my 08 WRX, from removing the steering wheel.
C 0071 C 0047 C 0042 Can anyone tell me what C 0047 is? Thanks |

Thanks for this, this just happened to me last night after replacing the wheel controls. I was very careful also, but I also read that you're not supposed to detach the clips from the airbag--should keep that attached and have someone else holding it while you work around it--what a PITA!
Hopefully they'll replace for me under warranty also...did you say you replaced those controls? I'm sure saying that would make them hesitant to replace under warranty right? |

I brought it in, they checked it out, said it was indeed my steering wheel angle sensor that was 'damaged', or not functional. Made an appt for the next day to drop it off at lunch, picked it up at the end of the day. All done under warranty, no questions asked, and I did not disclose my DIY installation however

Does anyone know what wires to tap into for a boost gauge? I want to go through the clock on my 09' WRX. It's a mechanical with three wires. what color wires are the power, ground and illumination on the clock side?

today when driving in traffic to work my ABS, VDC and hill assist light came on and stayed on until i got to work. i tried the code and S-On came on the ODO screen and then turned my instrument panel off and security started flashing. when i turn my car back on the warning lights aren't on anymore, but i haven't tried driving it again yet. should i take this into the dealer? i also haven't done any recent mods that require any wiring or anything to do with the steering wheel/column.
this is on an 08 WRX. |

Is it not possible to do the audio control swap withOUT messing up this steering angle sensor? This is something I had in mind to do on my 09 non-premium.
What are the logistics of the job anyway. Are the audio controls prewired in the steering wheel so you just need the controls to plug into it? Or does it require wiring? |

No wiring involved, you'll receive a new harness that has both cruise control and steering wheel controls--plugs into the same spot where cruise control plugs into now.
You may be able to--my suggestion is to have another person hold the airbag, while its still connected. I've heard disconnecting the airbag is what may trip this sensor? But this is just a theory....Let us know |

Just make sure to disconnect your battery, and wait a while. Wouldn't want an airbag in the face!

Bump....'cause I'm havin the-same-****in-issue, VDC off, ABS off and Hill Assist off, all illuminated and cannot re-engage, just installed WL steering-rack bushies.
So is it safe to say that its the steering-angle sensor and/or a Power Supply Voltage Failure for the VDC module? Last edited by BraveSTi; 01-26-2011 at 12:35 AM. |

Bump, since I am having this same problem in my 2011 WRX. I replaced the steering wheel with the GTSpec D-shaped wheel, and forgot to mark the "straight" angle when I removed the stock wheel. In the process of realigning the new wheel, I made contact across the horn with my ratchet causing the horn to honk. After finishing the tightening of the wheel and reconnecting the battery, the "VDC off" & "Hill Assist off" lights came on, and have not turned off since. At the same time the "one-click up/down" feature for my window wasn't working right either, it would only go the normal up if held all the way clicked either way. That problem went away, but the VDC & Hill Assist problems are still there, and I can feel that both do seem to be off. Any suggestions?
-Greg C/N After steering wheel install, VDC & Hill Assist are off. |

Trying to revive this thread as I am having a similar problem. I have a Subaru Impreza 2009 hatch 2.5L. I have the codes C0057 C0071 & C0076. I also have hill start assist warning light & vehicle dynamic control warning light remaining on after car is started.
I have check the diagram and have tested a lot of wires etc. I have tested some sensors and just yesterday pulled the neutral position sensor out and checked the switch was function correctly using an ohmmeter. When the switch wasn't depressed it was indicating OL when the switch was depressed it was indicating 5 mega ohm. So I assume this switch is open circuit but would the neutral position sensor switch interfere with the codes I have received and the VDC? Has anyone ever had this problem? Thank you for any input. |
