Screen freezes again! Now that the unit has been out longer there is more on the internet about this. Problem seems to be from the ASWC. This weekend might disconnect that and see if it works. Someone with the PAC said their's is working fine.

Well I guess that rules that out. It can't be the wiring, I've double checked it several times already and I don't see how that would be affecting touch screen anyways.

Yea, unless the screen freeze occurs after you depress a SWC button, then I can't see it being the ASWC. Hopefully Pioneer comes out with a firmware update to address the issue.

Well I emailed them and they said they have had reports on this problem and they were looking into to. If that means anything or not who knows. I still haven't really tried to reproduce the issue. If it happens it happens, since I'm not sure when it happens. I'll just notice it's frozen. I usually use the SWC buttons anyway and not the touch screen.

Ethan,
I have had the same problem. When I checked out the manual, it mentioned about a hard reset after the install. I pressed the reset button with the key in the ignition and in the off position. It cleared all of the screen freezes so far.

Tonight I got an error 2 X10 or something, the ipod would not connect, disconnected the ipod, the ipod worked on its own, so I've left it overnight to see what happens.

Hope the hard reset helps. I bought mine from amazon, however I made sure they would handle a return beforehand. I've saved emails from them and kept them in the loop about the issues so far. They offered me an RMA # last week if there were any more problems.

I have the same steering control adapters from SVXDC and it works fine, no issues with it at all.

Unless you are having other issues, I wouldn't send it back. Yes, the screen freeze sucks, but I'm sure a firmware update will fix this; however, it's totally up to you. So far I really like the HU as the interface is easy to use and is quick. I'm going to try the reset button today on my way to the office to see what happens. Fingers crossed...

I haven't driven the car much recently, but I'll try the reset button tonight and see if I have any issues from here on. I hope not!

On a side note, On Friday I pushed the reset button (first time ever) while I was driving and that unfroze the screen, so far last night and this morning I didnt' have any freezing issue.

Just remember to look in the manual and find the section about the initial reset before operation. I've been running a week without screen freezes. Now the nano won't play! It won't work in my wife's car, so I know it is the player. Apple crap! The old classic works well on my unit though! WTF!

Just try the initial reset, I would think it will fix your issues, it did for me.

So I appear to have cursed myself, now the bloody thing has frozen up twice in two days. I had gone over a week without a screen freeze incident after the hard reset.

Okay, anyone got a decent idea? Any reports from pioneer other than the email I got saying take it to a repair shop? I don't see that working on a what appears to be a software problem.

So I tried your reset trick and it hasn't' frozen on me in two days, however I have also unplugged the SWC (3.5mm jack only, not the wires) after I did the reset so I'm not sure about anything yet.

Well I have been in contact with Pioneer, their tech is trying to recreate the problem, but isn't having much luck.

Please have all the details avaialble (which iPod/iPhone your using,
with which Pioneer iPod cable along with the S/W Ver # of the iPod

AVH unit. What Apps are you running? If any, are the Apps aways running
in the background?

Have you reset the unit, if so have you disconnected all connected accessories?
Can you make the AVH-unit alone freeze with nothing connected to it(
by changing sourcing only) ? Does disconneting the steering wheel
interface module help or not? Or does something else need to be
connected to your AVH to make your freezing issues happen?
If you want you can answer this email ([email protected]) and it might help him out. I actually spoke with him in person which I thought was pretty cool customer support, they called me actually.

I performed the reset and so far have been fine. Can you reproduce the screen freeze? Mine was pretty simple to reproduce and would happen in these instances:
  • Repeatedly hit up and or down track to find a song. Like +30 times. I love the remote, but my kids in the back seat drive me nuts. lol The remote should function like the HU and traverse / activate the menus to get to a song, playlist, album, artist, etc. It should also work in App Radio mode. I won't go into the GUI nuances I've uncovered as that should be another thread and sent to Pioneer for addressing via a future firmware.
  • iPhone 4s with iOS v5.1.1 connected via CDIU201S cable, App Mode enabled, GPS App, Listening to music from iPhone and receive a txt or email. The sound from the HU would lower for a split second (expected behavior), the the HU display pauses for a split second, the GPS app goes from full screen to ever so slightly not full screen and poof the screen is frozen; however, I have control from the buttons on the HU, the SWCs, the remote and from the GPS app on the iPhone.
  • iPhone 4s with iOS v5.1.1 connected via CDIU201S cable, App Mode enabled, GPS App, Listening to music from iPhone. Press the mode button on the HU. Music stops, pauses or the volume decreases. Play with any on-screen menu. Hit the mode button to get back to GPS and poof the screen is froozen.

In my eyes, due to the interaction between the HU, App Radio and iOS App, my screen freezes appear to be either a bug with the App radio app and how it handles transitions between the HU and device plugged in or it's the HU and how it interacts with the App radio app and how it handles transitions between functions. Either way, to me it seems like a firmware on the HU or App Radio app issue. Possibly a limitation of the iPhone and when it glitches the return code send to the HU results in a screen freeze. Similarly to a blue screen from Windows.

In my case, there's no apps running. I have a droid phone and only an Ipod nano connected to it. I will try to disconnect the SWC and see if that makes any difference at all.

Mine freezes up more when I try to use the touch screen, I've not noticed it doing anything on the SWC buttons. However it is a good point.

The other option would be to disconnect the ipod cable too, and see what happens.

I will email the pioneer fella and see what happens. Going direct through their support on the website seems slow at best.

To me it seems more like a software issue, as I mentioned before, Pioneer want me to take it to the local repair shop, to be fair, I think that won't work either.

Hmm... Android? That's definitely you're problem there. Just kidding. Seriously, just kidding.

So no apps running, just the android for phone and iPod Nano for music? Connected via 2 USB cables or is the Android connected via bluetooth only? I had the screen freeze issue before and after the ASWC, so I'm not even placing that into the equation.

Whatever it is, I hope Pioneer gets their act together because iOS 6 is around the corner, so I hope the current firmware on the HU is forward compatible.

The phone is connected through BT only, and I prefer to use the nano due to better sound quality. I have to admit on this unit though, it is tougher to tell the difference than on the Subaru stock POS.

My unit has never frozen with using the SWC, always on the screen. Hopefully I hear from the tech guy, and we can work it out. I would hate to send a unit back when it is only a software bug. It has to be.

It was nice to read they are aware of it, so let's hope it gets sorted soon. It has not locked up since Friday, however that will probably change tomorrow now!

The nano is in USB port 1. I cannot see that making any difference though.

An update on mine, I"ve had two long drives and nothing froze. On Thursday night, I did the reset that tigerdonal talks about, but I also unplugged the 3.5mm jack of the SWC. Tomorrow I'll plug that back in and see if I still have some freezes.

That would surprise me if it were causing the problems. I hope not, as it cost me enough to get! lol. I might pop mine out now.

I've experienced no freezes this weekend, it is purely random. Our friends at Pioneer deny any issues via email again today, and want me to take it to a repair shop. Last time I did that, the old unit was there a week and did the same!

Right, off to pull the SWC....

Hmm... interesting and yes, sorry I didn't mention the GPS app that I used. It's the Motion-X GPS Drive v13 with the free voice over trial. Can you ask him if there is a way to get into a service / repair menu on the 8400? This way we can check our firmware version and make sure he's running the same version.
