Default Need help: 5x100 WRX --> 5x114 WRX hub conversion project

Hello all,
I'm in the process of collecting information to see if there's a possibility for standard WRXs to use 5x114 hardware. I have heard stories of guys running standard WRX hubs and disc brakes that are re-drilled to a 5x114 bolt patten as a way to used different types of wheels.

I have recently decided to see if there's a way to redesign a standard WRX hub so it will accomodate a some 05+ STi wheels. Keep in mind, that I plan to utilize the same wheel bearings, housing, and suspension components for the sake of keeping costs low.

Ultimately, I'd like to come away from this research project with some kind of a dimensional drawing that I could take to a machinest to have manufactured. I have access to a number of tools to help measure dimensions to the nearest 1 thousandth of an inch. I'm also employing the help of a couple of coworkers (both engineers) to help draw up everthing in one of the CAD programs.

The only problem that I'm running into now is sourcing parts. Since this is all R&D, I'd like to keep costs down. I can't really find any dealers who'll sell me parts at a decent price. I also seem to get ridiculed by them with disbelief that a project like this can be done. I wanted to request some help from locals. Here's a pic of what I'm looking for:

I was hoping some in the SCIC would have some parts lying around that I could borrow for a week or two:

Does anyone have an STi hub/housing assembly that I could borrow (front or rear)?

Does anyone have a WRX hub/housing assembly that I could borrow (front or rear)?

Ideally, I'd be taking everything apart to do a little reverse engineering. Any help, suggestions, locations of local junk yards that have Subarus (couldn't find any in Sunland), or ideas to help this little research project come along, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance!

Well, the 05+ sti front hubs won't go into the spindles. They use a bolt in front wheel bearing so it's all different. Additionally the strut mount is different on 05+ spindles so you'd have to have it machined. Plus I don't think there's enough room on your hub to have it re-drilled for 5x114.3.

I wonder what 6-gun charges for the bare, machined spindles.

Why purchase when I can just borrow someone's part that's just lying around their garage? I'd be more than happy to spring for a beverage and chat it up about Subarus also....that's the whole point of community on these boards.

I'd like to be able to use as much OEM WRX hardware as possible; I'm not a racer so I'll never have issues with weak bearing nor do I see any benefit for swapping out unnecessary hardware. It would be nice not to have to deal with differing strut mounting points between applications.

So is the issue a matter of clearance? I was hoping that a larger O.D. on a WRX hub could be used to accomodate a 5x114.3 drilling. Keep in mind all dimensions would stay the same as to utilize the existing spindle. But if the OD on the hub will have conflicts with the ID of other parts, the swap seems like it'll be more involved.

yeah, if you could re-drill the hubs it would be as simple as that. You'd just have to slap them on a mill with a rotary table or something to drill the holes accurately. I'm just not sure if there's room. PM javid; he would know for sure.

Any idea if you could add a hub that's a half inch wider to an existing WRX setup?

110mm = ~4.33 inches
114.3mm = ~4.5 inches
The delta is 0.16929 inches

Assuming that you could add 1/2 to 3/8s of an inch to the OD of a WRX hub, there should be more than enough clearance to have 5x114.3 bolt holes drilled. I'll definitely PM javid; thanks!

No worries buddy; if I find a way to produce a cheap alternative, it'll be free to all. I just need to find out if it's even possible. We'll see what happens. Know of any junkyards within 50 miles of Burbank that carry suby stuff?

did you even check out 6gunracing? those parts are oem. it only make sense to convert over to 5x114 for beefier bearing, and better wheel selection.

Thanks for the link to the thread; I'm definitely going to check everything else out. From a prelim scan of the OP, it already seems pricey. Having owned 3 Subarus thus far, I see no need to beef everything else up. I never put the car under enough stress to make WRX wheel bearings fail. I'm all for 6gun and their products but I'm looking for something a bit cheapter for a DD setup. Once again, thanks for the link; I'm sure it has a ton of great info.

I agree 100% your deconstructing something that has been improved thrue hundreds of dollars in the Subaru Corp. Why use a weaker hub? 6gun engineered hubs that can accommodate the need for stronger hubs on a wrx. I think money is time and dedicating this much time and effort you can just buy one from six gun. Sorry, I misunderstood you in your first post. I thought you wanted to use the '05 + sti bearings. Hope you could pull this off. I have a 2 spare driver side knuckle w/hub that has a bad wheel bearing, and a passenger rear knuckle w/ hub and bad wheel bearing. You're more than welcome to have it, if you want.

good luck on this and keep us inform...there are wheels i want and wish i had the lug pattern for them without using spacer conversion or sourcing expensive sti parts

subscribed!

I, too, have been wondering if this is feasible. only thing i found nearly close to this is a 15mm spacer that converts 5x100 to 5x114, but that totally messes up the way the wheels sit. 15mm is a lot.

best of luck!

I've already tried the junkyards around my area. I'm in the Glendale/Pasadena/Burbank area so the only area I really know about is in Sunland. I only found domestics/honda/toyota yards...nothing w/Subarus.

Where do you go? .onelane's hooking it up with some WRX parts but I'd still like to get my hands on some STi bits.

tony - ideally, the simplest solution is to have custom hubs spindles machined with the larger BCD. but that would involve getting the splined section machined, etc. Not sure how hard it is to make that actual part. If this is something that can be machined and not cast then it would be "easy". then all we'd need to do is buy the new hub spindle, new bearings , seals and get them pressed in.

any luck with any of this, itd be awesome if you found a solution to this problem, or Subaru should just stock all the wrx's with 5x114... oh wait, thatd be to hard.

We reviewed the parts needed to produce what the OP is after about 1 year ago. It is certainly doable, however, machining splines involves the same process to machine gears. It isn't easy or cheap to tool up for this. Once you are tooled up the parts could be made for not too much more than OEM hubs. We never persued it due to our estimates that realtively few people would be 'serious' enough to want the conversion, and not already have or want the R180 rear end or the beefy STi front bearings.

If folks are serious, they could pester TiC, who is now carrying our hub kits, for a group buy and we could get it done.

Cheers,

Javid
