So long, it's been a great ride!
Hi All,
Well I have decided toi sell off my STi's. Both the track one and the street (spare parts) one. Race car and all associated bits left yesterday to Conn. Street car is getting a new short block and then going up for sale. I Have been tracking the STi since late 2003 and really like it. In fact it has been the most fun of any car I have tracked over the last 20 years or so, except for perhaps a 914. I have just been unable to keep it glued together, regardless of the money spent. I ended up fixing it all the time, to the exclusion of driving. Time for a change. I ended up getting a GT3 which means I learn to drive all over again... Anyway, This is a great group of folks, and a treasure trove of information! Ray

nice I would love a widebody 993 since I would have to sell my house to afford the gt3 ha.
but I've learned over the years that a fast fun Subaru is not cheap and if you want to race them pick a different car. |

Hi Vaughn,
Everything went with the race car, only thing left is a set of Enkie's with NT-01's on them. silverwrx666: it was not about the money - it was the reliability. I was probably spending $5K every winter fixing and replacing things. If that had given me a car that just ran during the season, I would have kept it. I kept the HP to ~360WHP and even with Stoptechs and 2 different air ducting systems was running out of brakes at fast tracks. I was replacing wheel bearings every winter, and occasionally during the season. Every race team I spoke to - VT sports car, Phoenix racing were all saying the same thing, not a Subaru - to heavy by 1000lbs, way way past the design envelope... VT sports car changes wheel bearings every race, exhaust is Inconel ($8K - I priced them). I put a lot of hard miles and just could not keep it up. Last week I did 500 track miles in 3 days on 2 tracks... Still like the way the car drove! Ray |

Ray, you're not the first. It explains the gaggles of Miatas out there. It's why I went to the CRX racecar (although from an S4) and it owed me nothing when it went to an Ohio team. Heck.....5 years with nothing but tires.
Pix of the GT-3 prease? I've thought about one of these on and off for a long time, but Pete told me enough about them to be scared. Doing your own work can certainly keep your expenses limited. Are you going to track it? Find Steve Bater...he's been running a 997 GT-3 for a few years with COM and BMW and of course, talk with Pete. |

Hi Jack,
I did ~ 500 miles last week at LCMT & Calabogie with it. I know Steve well - I instruct with him at PCA and BMW events... I tend to do my own wrenching, and I do view this as an opportunity to buy more tools :-) But information is MUCH harder to come by with Porsches than say Subaru's One example is the Subaru ECU was reversed-engineered quickly, Porsche is still shrouded in mystery - which is why it is all so expensive... The GT3 is a beast, in the right hands way faster then the STi, just tires alone, 500 lbs lighter, and brakes big enough to stop a train... I have tracked a number of Porsches of the years, my first outings were at Bryer in a 914... but never a rear engine car... Ray |

That took way to long Ray! Enjoy it. How was the GT3 in T1 at Tremblant? Entering with a little more finesse maybe! No brakes I hope!
Thanks for the few bits in parts over the years. I think I'm still running a seat or 2 of yours in the race cars. -Paddy |

Wow, nice step up. Can't blame anyone for giving up an STI for a GT3.

I'd paint the GT3. All black. OR all white.
But it being a track car the paint doesn't really matter to you does it? Either way, good job solving the 'hole in the pocket' problem. & BEAUTIFUL PORSCHE. Enjoy! |

Ah, memories of Briar. (KFoote is going to wake up now). My first track day ever was a combo BMW Boston/COM event. An Alfa flipped nose to tail while we were in the classroom. There was a big window behind the instructor teaching the class and it was fully visible to the entire class as it flew through the air. He saw the reaction, turned around and without breaking stride said "that's what trailing throttle oversteer will get you here". The groups were all assigned instructors and the entire group would go to a corner to watch. When it was your turn, they'd send you out and watch from the corner, then when (if) you came back, comment on what you were doing. A father/son team in my group were sharing an Omni and the father flipped it on his first lap. I've run both directions. Seems like the wild west compared to today.
Enjoy the GT-3.....I know you will. Don't leave though. I've owned Subarus about 30% of the time I've been on nasioc. It isn't required. |

Wise decision Ray. I'm surprised you've held out this long.
Jack, I wouldn't worry too much about the reliability with the GT3. Track days are what they're built for. An early 996 Carrera or Boxster is a different animal. I wouldn't be as confident in one of those with the way you, Ray or any of the other track junkies drive. |

Wrx/Sti no good for tracking? I guess I can throw that idea out the window.

As a for example - I was in Canada and in 3 days, I put 500+ track miles on the GT3. That is the kind of life the STi saw. My problems really began when I deviated from stock - specifically the motor and turbo. I was doing a what I considered to be a conservative 360 WHP. This was so far beyond the design envelope of the car that it simply could not be made to work. I also had a big radiator, oil coolers, tranny coolers, multiple brake ducts, etc. Nothing worked. I was also reasonably fast with the car, so heat and stress were the biggest factors. I would easily go through a set of rear wheel bearings a season ( often more), fronts would last 2 seasons, I replaced the front suspension every 2 years, changed fluids every season and then some...
Ray - who really really misses the STi... |

Hi Paddy
I am lifting in the GT3 for T1, This car is to stinkin fast not to, and the suspension settings are all out of whack which is always interesting in a Porsche. Very very different style, but there is just enormous potential here, car is 500lbs lighter than the STi, the front brakes are literally 2x the size of the Stoptechs I had (and probably 2x the cost!) Yeah, I was going to say at stock power levels, with good brake pads and tires, the sti is an ok, but not great track day car, it's too heavy. The GT3 is built for this. I would not miss an STI one bit if I upgraded to a GT3.
