I was just messing around, thinking about the BRZ and WRX layouts and AWD. Simply integrate a forward drive shaft and front differential into the engine block and you have a WRX with BRZ balance! Note that I lengthened the wheelbase a tad vs. WRX to allow for some legroom, I'm sure the handling trade-off would be worthwhile. You could have a Mazda-long hood and plenty of room for cooling system radiators

Sorry, just trying to entertain myself a bit, really looking forward to Thursday.
Yeah, this is totally possible. Just put the driveshafts through the engine block. That makes total sense. Why didn't those dumb assed engineers think of that?

And this is where someone posts a picture of that Legacy racecar that DID have a driveshaft through the block.

If you want to keep the lower center of gravity that helps Subaru vehicles with the Boxer Engine design, you can't put it over the driveshaft. AWD won't work on the BRZ because of how it's set up. Without a complete reconstruction of the layout in a BRZ, there's no way you could make an AWD variant.

My proposed clutch design? You mean my suppliers.

It would end up being small and multi-plated. And expensive.

So while we wait in anticipation to see what the car will look like (and whether it will be a 3 door), let's look at some other 3 doors out there just for fun (mainly because I like pics as well). Yes I know you don't get them in the US, but I'm just looking at random 3 door cars. The Focus RS is the most aggressive, the Megane RS265 looks polarising in that I don't know whether I like or hate it, and the Astra VXR looks cool but not aggressive from the front. I'm intrigued as to what a 3 door WRX could look like....

Focus RS

Correct.

They did, it would cost too much.

I, for one, don't want VW accouterments in an STI. It's just the wrong category - Subaru is not known for their luxury appointments, so why start now? It seems silly to try and compete with VW at their pricepoint and competitive advantage. Instead, with the STI they should focus on what Subaru is known for: horizontally-opposed engines, AWD utility, safety, and reliability. Trying to do all these AND throw a bunch of money into engineering/designing a "VW-quality-interior" seems like a waste when it's not even what Subaru is good at or what their core demographics value.

What about those of us that have been driving a Legacy GT around for the last 5+ years. My 05 LGT has more refinement than a 2013 WRX or STi.

Unless Subaru just wants rich teenager money (An extremely small demographic) They better offer some refinement with their power. A lot of people who grew up in the WRX generation are getting older and don't want a car based on pure performance any more.

This year the 28th falls on a Thursday and New York is currently on Daylight Saving Time. Subaru's press conference is scheduled to begin at 11:05 AM EDT on Thursday March 28th.

Sounds like there's a lot of pent up demand for a $75k legacy gt300 based Panamera fighter. I'll take my Subarus cheap and reliable thank you very much. I don't need to be competing with the suit and tie crowd for a "luxury" car. The interior on my wrx is still perfectly adequate 11 years later.

Saw this about the 2008. It seems we have been seeing WRX test mules in Impreza bodies. Hopefully a prototype will be spotted soon.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't really consider comfortable seats to be a luxury item. I don't consider seats that do more than slide fore and after, and lean backwards and forwards luxury, not in this day and age. I've seen plastic pedal cars at Toys'R Us that have interiors nicer than, and with less hard plastic than my WRX. I had a 86 CRX Si that had a nicer more comfortable interior than my WRX.

Whatever form the car comes in, 2, 3, 4, or 5 doors, I hope Subaru keeps the WRX a softer & more livable car than the STI variant.

But looking at what Subaru did with the Forester/FXT, I think the new car will still be a sea of plastic and the same simplicity (lack of amenities) as we see today. What I find somewhat humorous is that a base WRX comes with automatic climate control, but no lumbar adjustment!

For one, as you get older the Legacy is probably the car you're looking for. It's always been a better "luxury" competitor than the Impreza-based STI, why not be content with that? They're selling the current Impreza and the last gen Impreza just fine without competing with VW interiors, so it's not as small a demographic as you think.

A lot of people who grew up with the WRX should look towards the Legacy if they desire comfort over the cheap/reliable Impreza platform. It just seems more logical to look for comfort in a car that has more room, more comfortable seating arrangement, etc.

You guys want soft cars? I say you're all soft. Wanting luxury items doesn't mean you're more "refined" than me, more "mature" than me, it just means you've been told that you need these things and you accept it. I hope Subaru fills that niche that other manufacturers are falling over themselves to avoid - sparse content for a good price. Much better than throwing a bunch of good-for-nothing tech that only grabs the more flighty buyers looking for a new-fangled piece of tech in their car because "The Joneses down the street have one so I should too".

(no hard feelings guys, just my opinion and not necessarily one you have to share)

Probably right!

Either way I bet it won't be my dream of a coupe STi with dual clutch trans.

Idk I tend to agree with "Gettheledout" and certainly you're entitled to your own opinion; but is it too hard to ask for some better seats, better sound system, or better interior fitment?
