I agree. Post something. I am interested in the same issue. I went to your website, some cool stuff there but not WRX. Have you done WRX engine buildups? Examples? Customer cars?

Well.. I just got a 2003 WRX so I am investigating stuff now.. I would love to spend the money with Cobb.. but for the long block alone, before any external stuff you are talking about around 10K for the engine before its installed.... add a STI six speed upgraded turbo, ECU, intercooler and a few other goodies and now you have a 50K automobile.

What I would sort of like to do long term, is build a bigger engine from available junkyard parts (with the correct machining of parts before installation) for a lot less money.

A most interesting thread. When I was doing Datsun stuff, I took the time to find a good machine shop that was recommended by all the local Datsun tuners. I talked to the guys at the shop and did conservative things. I did all the assembly myself after cleaning the block for the last time and painting it (the machine shop hot-tanked it of course but I went through it one last time to remove any metal particles). I checked each thread and used taps to debur them before final torguing. And I used engine pre-lube on all parts cranks etc. I didn't have micrometers but I did have the machine shop verify each bearing and write down the clearances. I always ended up with solid motors and I saved a bunch of money because I did all the heaving lifting, assembly and dis-assembly. And I enjoyed taking my time with the re-build. I've heard stories like this before. It can be very expensive...

That's why I would like to do the same sort of thing if I build up a motor for my current car.. Save money, learn something about the motor, and have a carefully assembled motor in the end...

I agree, I have built a few GM V8's and I don't see why I couldn't take on a Subaru rebuild also. If you utilize a good machine shop and take your time it is not that difficult. You do have to realize anything you may miss though could cause a catastrophic failure. Even if it were the machine shops fault it would be hard to prove.

Helps to have a machine shop with experience in the motor you are working on. Each motor has its peculiarities and things that you want to do with a rebuild. If a machine shop has experience with racing or high performance engines with your chosen block then its just a matter of talking with them to make sure they understand what your goals are and you understand what needs (or doesnt need) to be done. Of course a local machine shop helps a whole bunch. In Atlanta there are a number of shops with experience with various V8s. I used to use Sunbelt performance for Datsun motors. They had all kinds of experience. I will have to start looking around to see if anyone has Subaru skills. Seems like all the long term experts are mostly in Australia thoug.
