Default STI and WRX intake manifold difference?

OK. I’m sure it has being covered before, but I could not find it! So any help would be nice.

Is the STI intake manifold better or is just “cosmetics”? If it is, will a 06 + STI manifold fit/work with my 06 WRX? Any advantages?

Thanks

when did the wrx goto the plastic manifold? 08? Cause I'm thinking there could be benefits of getting rid of it.

OK, Thanks! I think I will use the time and money in other mods.

I'm 99% sure that the previous metal manifold will NOT work on an 08

Yea from what I read the red is just some heat resistor thing, but it doesn't really net anything at all. If you want the red take yours off and just paint it.

I believe there a few small little nik nak differences but nothing that causes power gains/losses. And the 08 manifolds aren't plastic (which I'm sure you know or figured, anyway). I've heard that material is actually better for retaining heat than the metal. Just what I've been told, though...

Stick with the stock manifold. The plastic manifold is lighter and works just as well.

Not plastic, but something that looks like plastic...

I heard that is not just about heat. It is easy/cheap to make a very smooth surface with "plastic".

The red paint on the STI intake manifold is just that - paint. No thermal characteristics.

The 08s do have a plastic [or plastic-esque] IM. The STis don't, but the WRXs do. Benefits are decreased heat transmission [it's like a big phenolic spacer... kinda...ish], drawbacks are decreased holding pressure.

Yes it was in 08. No there are no benefits to changing it unless you are making some really insane power and it wont work with your set up.

Yes it will work but its a total PITA! You will need parts from the 08+ STI and an older 07- WRX as well to complete the swap. Power gained would be about 0hp on a stock or even well moded car.

This^!!!

I saw some one on another forum take one and block it off and it held 35PSI over night with no problems! FYI thats more abuse in 12 hours then a 35R would put on it in a year!

The new Composite Intake manifold has nothing wrong with it! The only real problem is the new I/C. It has composite end tanks and at higher boost levels they are known to start leaking at the joint to the core.

As for the OPs question its red paint! thats it. Nothing more.

just stick with the plastic manifold. I have yet to read where one failed under pressure and like already said it saves weight and is smoother on the inside.

What about swapping the 08 wrx intake manifold with the 09 wrx?

They are the same.

I think there was an LGT running more than 30psi on the composite IM.

Compromise?

But for the OP if you're planning on deleting your TGVs any time soon just paint it then.

Can anyone else hear a plastic whistle sound around 4k rpms on their 09 WRX? Kinda sounds like a train whistle. I just figure its the intake manifold.

Running a STi manifold on an 06 wrx here. I had GS port it but they had no wrx cores. Only difference was the FPR vac line tap, needed a longer hose, no big deal.

FWIW the LGT uses the same manifold. I bought a STi off ebay soley for the wrinkle red color and wanting WRX throttle body placement for intercooler routing.

Hill up at Agile performance told me this was actually a good mod to do, because the LGT/08+wrx manifold suffers from "alot of turbulence" in the air stream. I didnt ask any other questions about it, but he knows what he is doing enough for me to believe him. I dont think (nor got the impression that he does) it is a life-altering, dyno-smashing modification, but is not without merit, and may be worth considering for the 08+ crowd doing TGV's anyway....its not expensive, and you are "in the neighborhood" so to speak. Just be aware whatever IC setup you were running previously, some or all of it wont work afterwords.

Hmmm, if anything the composite manifold is likely to reduce turbulent flow since it is so smooth inside relative to a cast aluminum manifold.

i think it has more to do with the way the throttle body was aligned/placed than the interior surface. Ive also never looked inside one of the composite manifolds. There could be parts where the molding left protruding edges at the runners or tb or wherever. The composite manifold is much cheaper to produce than the sti one is, and lets face it, subaru wasnt out looking to do the modding community favors by making the change, it was purely a cost decision. If it functioned better for less money, one has to ask the question why the STI's wasnt changed in 2008 like the wrx was. I would imagine subaru left the metallic one on the sti for a reason.
