How I de badged my WRX Wagon
hello all,
I decided recently to de-badge the back of my 02 WRX wagon. Nothing wrong with it, I just decided that I was tired of having no money to modify my car, and I was getting bored. so here's what I used. from left to right: Mothers Claybar System, Big bottle of Goo Gone, Omniflex Fishing line, and a hair dryer. Not Pictured: Rags. I started by dousing all the badges on my trunk with a large helping of Goo Gone and letting it soak in. It should be noted that Goo gone is not the same as Goo/Goof off. those things will strip paint, so don't use them (Unless your into that kind of look). I pulled my car into the shade of my car port and slid the fishing line behind the letters and pulling off the "S" very slowly. The Goo Gone removed most of the resistance so it was pretty easy. Don't put too much force on the line because it'll break. Once you've drawn the fishing line all the way through the letter may still hang on. Don't sweat it, just pull the bugger off. It should also be noted, that since my car was sitting in the New Mexico sun for a couple of hours, that the adhesive holding the letters on was already pretty soft. If you're lucky and have a garage or chooses to do this on a cool/overcast day then you may need to used the hair dryer to loosen up the adhesive. After you've pulled off the "S U B A R U" badges you'll be left with the bulk of your work, removing the adhesive. Grab the spray bottle from the clay bar kit and douse the gunk on your trunk. Now there are two ways of removing the gunk one is by going to your local auto parts store and buying a pack of plastic razor blades. Seeing as I am broke as a joke I opted for the less costly thumbnail approach. Which is just like it sounds, lightly scrape most of that crap off with your thumb nail. after you get alot of it off, wipe the area down with the clay bar. and re spray it with the stuff from the clay bar kit, and wipe it down with a rag. Then just wash, rinse, and repeat until you get all that crap off. I wanted to take off all the badges from my trunk though, so that WRX/Impreza badge had to go too. this gunk was extra nasty and it looked like it was actually starting a rust spot in between the "R" and the "X". So i'm glad I did it. FINISHED! everyone likes a clean bottom.

Thanks. The biggest problem I had with it was that My thumb hurt for two or three days after I was done.

a rubber wheel would have saved you a couple hours and had the job finished in about 5 minutes. Looks good though!

How recent did you do this? Just curious if there is anything faded behind that didn't show up in your photos, I may do this on my bugeye wagon next time I detail it, I'm just worried about having a bit of a shadow left behind from faded paint. For what it's worth I detail my car regularly and it's always got a good coat of wax on it, although it is yellow which fades and the car does sit outside.

Suppahotsauce - what's a rubber wheel?
Normawhite - I think it was a little less than $30 03yellowwrx - I made this write up back in march but I never had time to edit/finalize it until yesterday, so did this a while ago. Since then i've washed my car several times and i've never had any hint of "paint shadow" around where my old badges were. glad you all liked it. |

http://www.tcpglobal.com/autobodydepot/adhremove.aspx Scroll down and look at the Astro Smart Eraser or the red wheel below it. Just like it sounds. Its a rubber wheel you use with a drill to remove trim adhesive. I just used one to remove my rear emblems. Took all of 3 minutes to get the gunk off with the wheel and another 2 minutes to do a quick wetsand and polish to get the sunfade out. |

hey Cam,
Not much is new man, I'm still broke as a joke but I did a brake upgrade the other month. Working on a write up for that (motive power bleeter, ate super blue, Goodridge steel lines, Brembo drilled rotors and metal matrix pads). Thanks about the write up. I made another one about installing an Optima over on Clubwrx.com. I know that installing a new battery and de badging your car are pretty basic stuff, but I've seen alot of questions around about both those things, so I figured I'd start small. hows things down in Albuquerque? I gotta come out sometime when you're gonna run your wagon at the strip. Or at least to get my broke @$$ tuned up. |

Since you used a clay bar, you might want to consider giving your trunk a quick wax too.

Looks good on all accounts. I just did this myself today...must be something in the water
Mine was a little easier since I just had my car completely repainted...so the adhesive on the emblems they put back on hadn't really gotten more than about 2 weeks old. I'm putting the blue Subaru oval badge on the back of my hatch though, right in the center, as the only badge the WRX will wear...I just like the way that one looks on some of the newer Subies. |
