Default knocking when engine is off

for the past few days, when I turn off car after driving for 10~15 minutes, it give me ticking and/or knocking noises

it last for few minutes and eventually it goes away.

however it doesn't do that when car is idling or moving

also, when car is idling, I hear noise, sounds like some sort of fan is having difficulty, however when I starts to drive I can still hear it but quieter due to road noise..

Does anybody have similar issues?

car is 13 impreza sport premium 5mt

It's the engine and or exhaust cooling off. When its hot out, and cars hot you'll notice it more. It's normal for every car. You take a 700-800 deg exhaust with heat shields then cool it off it'll pop and shift etc. Someone else might have a different explanation but that's what I've always assumed it was. It's normal tho, all of my cars do it. Tahoe is louder than the rest, but all do.

My service person says it is the PZEV doing its thing. I notice it when the car is idling, like when I step out to get the mail, and also when I shut the car off.

I'd be a little concerned about him servicing my car then- just joking, I'm sure he is an outstanding technician

Nope it is no-load induced knock. Your motor is toesed.

Your joking, right? I doubt he has bottom end bearing troubles in a stock 2013 impreza, especially when it happens after the engine is turned off.

Yup. I have a 2012 with over 28K. My daughter will sometimes come out in the garage when I come home from work and mock the ticking sound. "Tick, Tick, Tick...."

my car only has 6300 miles on it, I was bit worried because I need to go on a 800 mile road trip with full load this weekend.

Don't worry about it at all. You'd be better off worrying about a meteor crashing into you while you drive- seems that's a more imminent threat than the sounds your talking about from your car.

Id be more worried about small rocks and debris hitting the windshield on a long road trip than the engine cooling noises!
I followed a pickup truck too closely ( 5-7 car lengths) on day on the turnpike, and got a nice chip from a tiny grain of gravel kicked up.
Man I wish large non-semi's were legally required to run mudflaps!

Hood deflector would help a little, wind deflectors wouldn't, clear bra would help the best.

Don't worry about it too much, its inevitable. I have a hood deflector but my bumper looks like it was hit with birdshot from 100 yards. Oh well, its just a Subaru.

Yeah, a 3m clear film is going to be my next "mod".
Also- if you do any dirt/gravel roads, mudflaps will save you from many chips.

Ever since I chipped my first Sube's windshield, I'm really conscious of the road conditions and whats ahead of me. not that I was oblivious before- but the thing chipped so easily, I just dont follow trucks and semi's at all like I have ever done in the past.

Thank you for the information,

I don't plan to drive offroad/dirt, I plan to get hood deflector, and wind deflector for possibly reducing noise, and maybe aero crossbar for future use.

I'll look into 3m clear film

The 3m film is often a fairly pricey dealer add-on. You can buy it yourself but car tint shops often have it and will do it much cheaper than a dealer. After 30k on my 12 I had several small chips on the leading edge of the hood (so the hood deflector would have been worthwhile) as well as all over the bumper.
Thays why I'm gonna spend a few hundo on the 3m film this time around.
I'm going to get the oem hood deflector next service visit. I get a good enough "loyalty" discount that its cheaper than online or ebay!
Enjoy your new car, and be safe and have a nice roadtrip!
