SPT/Sti Short Shifter Review (if anybody hasn't posted it yet)!!!
I just installed the SPT/Sti (they are the same part) Short shifter..
I got it from Carlsen Subaru for about 236$. First off the kit. You get the whole shifter assembly. This includes the shift lever, the rubber flange mounting gasket, and two linkages. One going from the lever to shift the tranny and another connecting to a rod that is attached to a stationary bracket (has a eurathane bushing at the end). NOTE: There are NO instructions!! You will need an instruction manual of some sort. OR.. You can look at how the shifter is assembled yourself or look into the i-club website. Installation.. I took a "year" trying to figure out how to take out the pin that holds the universal shifting linkage together while under the car. Eventually figured out that the all of the parts except for the shift lever itself was different. The dimensions were identical! Therefore, I spent probably 170 bucks too many for the shifter kit!! Followed the instructions on the web and it went in fine. Performance.. This shifter has MUCH less slop (IMHO) than the stock one. This is since the moment arm changes. The position of the shift lever bushing is about 1" higher. This gives the shifter more leverage. The shifts are a lot more crisper and quicker. Conclusion.. It seems that Subaru is ripping off customers with parts that we don't need. Plus it lead me to do a lot of work that was unneccesary. Still, I was able to quickly install the shifter in one afternoon and the performance of the shifter has impressed me. Out of a scale of 1-10, I give it a 6.5 . Note: if anybody has found a use for these extra parts other than spare parts, please inform me! Tim

Now, get some CUSCO bushings for your shifter and you'll give it an 8.5. I'm serious!

Interesting, but not surprising. Does anyone know if there a difference if you get the STi/Prodrive version? To answer my own question: IIRC it is the same thing as the SPT/Sti shifter setup. I think there Prodrive/STi one was what the SPT/STi version was called before SOA started to bring them over. Is this what everyone else knows to be true. One another note has anyone looked at the SYMS shifter to see how different those parts are?

I was told by an aftermarket parts dealer that the STi and SYMS models were identical. He said he contacted SYMS and basically it was one of those things were they bought a bunch of the STi Units and simply put there name on it.

I'm not following this... are the parts the same as a stock unit (minus the shifter)? Thanks

what are the stock parts made of? Is it possible the STi one uses tougher parts?

The SPT(SOA) shift kit are Stock WRX shifters. From what I can remeber the STi uses a differnt linking arm and bushing as does the Syms, they modify stock units to there specs. If it matters Im using a STi kit, handcarried all the way from STi in Yokohama.

I have the this shifter. I purchased it from my dealer and had it installed by the dealer. This was when I bought my car. I had the car for about two weeks before the short throw shifter because they had to order it and then I had to setup an install time and all.
I like it a lot. I show people how short the lengths are and they are amazed, really. It's a great buy. Tom |

can anyone else confirm that the stock and the STi shifters are identical other than the shift lever? I don't want to waste my time ripping everything else appart to put the exact same parts back in!

I installed a Kartboy shifter and bushings in a car with the STi setup (SPT really I think they are the same. I took some pics of the Kartboy, STi and OEM RS shifter and bushings side by side. Basically, the STi shifter looks a lot like the Graham Good one. The tail piece is longer than stock one. When I say tail piece I mean the part from where the bolt goes though to the ball socket. The STi and Kartboy essentially had the same tail length. The part above the where the bolt goes through, the shaft, was much shorter with the Kartboy and the STi and OEM being almost the same length. The STi is a little shorter but not much.
The bushings for the STi look exactly the same as the OEM one. The STi may feel ever so slightly firmer but not a ton. The Kartboy bushings feel very hard, essentially the same as the Cusco bushings. You can probably push a thumbnail in the material and make a mark that will disappear. I have pics that will eventually end up on the AZScoobie site but, I'm not sure when. I'd say I'll send them to anyone in advance but I'm not at home right now and I'm not sure when I'm returning. I'm kind of in the hospital now with stinking pneumonia. I finally feel well enough to sit up and read. At least I have the I club to keep me company when my visitors leave Peaty |

thanks for the 411,
my main issues / questions pertain to the linkage itself. Is it different from stock, and is a syms setup different from an sti. Thanks All Aaron |

The only difference you would feel in the shifting is if the bushings used were different. Both in the "H" bracket attaching to the chassis and the bushing on the other linkage going to the stationary attach point on the tranny. (the round one) The only other way is if the linkage geometery was different.
If the linkage material was different, you wouldn't feel a thing. It's just a matter of using strong material so that the linkages don't bend so much under shifting stresses. (slop in othr words) I have looked at the Sti shifter kit on the Sti site and have seen no apparent differences in geometery from the kit that they have here. I have also compared the linkages in the kit to the linkages already installed on the car and they are identical. Tim |

If I remember right, off line Kartboy has told me that the STi linkage is basically the same as the OEM's but he probably hasn't said anything because he has a vested intrest in saying so. People might think he's just trying to sell more kartboy shifters if he says something. Like he really has to anyway
SM - I replaced Jeff in Lenexa's STi shifter with a Kartboy maybe he wants to sell his old one to you? You can look his e-mail up in the members section. |

hmmm... sounds like I better call and cancel my order! Anyone know if its possible to just get the STi LEVER? I very much like the height of the stock shift lever, and I think the kartboys are too low... Any other options?

my Rallitek Short Shifter works flawless, I guess unless you want a whole kit then thats the way to go, but my car is new so no need to remove bushings that aren't worn.
