So I mocked up the cardboard template under the car and here is the updated shape. I trimmed the template down a little on both front and back, and added a hole for access to oil filter and drain plug. The black dotted line is where I will bend up the metal approximately 6 degrees. It's not in the template but it is illustrated by the red line, I'm going to add a little edge that will be bent up vertically. Two pics here from both sides so you can see the new shape relative to the outline of the original splash guard.

OK here is the measurement between the hole on the splash guard.
NOTE, it may not seem so because of the slight angle the photo was taken at, and because the splash guards is not laying perfectly flat, but all lines drawn intersect at right angles. The hole I plan to use for my skid plate are the ones circled in yellow.

Next step: make a final template with bends, make sure hole for oil filter and drain plug leave enough work room, and price out sheet metal.

Stay tuned.

Comments, criticism, and suggestions highly encouraged.

if its cut/bent correctly, the wind current underneath should suction out the hot air

I love it! I'm going to Home Depot tomorrow to try this out! What did you use to cut the metal? I'm going to just use some tin-snips I guess. Also, I'm going to cut a few slits in this thing to vent it...because some people told me if you replace the stock plastic splash guard, it'll get too hot? Weird. Any problems with this?

I haven't had an cooling trouble, but it's only 50 degrees outside. Hot air probably follows the firewall down to the transmission tunnel for it's exit which is still completely open.

I cut my signs with a jigsaw, they were too thick to cut easily with tin snips.

I have a custom skid plate to protect the header on my forester xt, and i have not had any cooling problems temp outside is 75+. I think the front gap below the grill is allowing cool air to flow through the radiator and down underneath the car.

Sorry everyone for the lack of updates. The project took a new direction when I attempted to see if I could incorporate brake cooling ducts into the design. I was trying to vent air to the brakes from the underside of the car. No luck with that idea, and I'll be going back to the original idea, and picking it up again soon. I'll keep you updated.

So I was at a metal supply shop today, and asked about prices on stainless steel sheet metal. Prices on steel are not that much lower than the price of buying a skid plate. I'm going to look into plastic or some polymer as a meterial for the skid plate. Anyone got sugestions?
