Just bought a used COBB catted version. I'd ditch it for this if it was catted. Especially coated.

It's in the works according to GS.

The 2.5 liter motors need a catted pipe to help against boost creep.

Minimal gains and a lot more noise are the only things catless is going to provide. Not to mention in California, having no cat is just asking the officer next to you at the light to pull you over and possibly impound your car...

He probably meant on the stock turbo.

a tune prevents boost creep? And yea i know why people need cats but the interest has grown so much over the past few years.

I have to agree. Years ago, everyone wanted a "test pipe." That was the only way to go. Maybe the concerns for the atmosphere are striking a cord somewhere. The gains are definitely worth mentioning when looking at the two, but at what expense? Oh well. Really nice looking pipe. I just can't justify the price, personally, but super nice piece.

I meant on the stock turbo. A tune can help but won't eliminate the problem. It's a mechanical problem.

Did GS close the group buy with zero participants?!

The thread is locked, with no buyers listed. That's crazy. I guess the uncatted thing was a deal breaker for most people. Usually their products get snatched up like crazy. This really surprised me.

Sorry, not a thread about boost creep but I think I have seen some of the top Subaru tuners state that a factory turbo cannot even flow enough air to cause boost creep.

This seems to be a highly debated subject.

Maybe if you push the factory turbo well beyond VE it will creep?

The downpipe looks very nice and if I was in the market, I would rather pay an american company an extra couple $100.

Grimmspeed, will your catless downpipe cause boost creep on a factory turbo with a good tune?

I ran catless with an OTS Cobb Stage 2 with 0 creep.

Last edited by 03WRXWagon; 12-05-2012 at 06:50 PM. Reason: Edited for stage 2 cobb catless causing no boost creep.

Boost creep is a function of the wastegate not flowing enough bypassing the turbine wheel.

VF39, VF43, VF48. Wanna know what the only difference in them is? The size of the wastegate.

The added backpressure from a catted pipe helps.
Or you can port the wastegate.
Or you can run EWG.

I live in a state that requires yearly emissions testing and inspection even on new cars. Actually had to have it done on my car right after purchase with less than 200 miles on it because I bought it in another state, which is a bit ridiculous but otherwise I don't mind. Catted will still increase power, my butt dyno wont miss the few extra hp when I finally upgrade. If I need more power I'll buy more parts...when $ available.

Cut the downpipe and weld in your own high flow cat. That's what I did with a noname bellmouth, with a quality cat. Probably flowed better than any catted version you can purchase.

I am interested to see what Grimmspeed has to say. I am 99% I have seen many tuners say that the "creep" that some people see on a factory turbo can be tuned out as it is not real boost creep. I lurk more than post so maybe my memory is flawed.

boost creep is a mechanical issue where the hotside housing is mal formed and exhaust gasses dont get directed TRROUGH the wg opening

i have cured several 'boost creep' 'issues' with a dremel on the housing

and it had NOTHING WHAT EVER to do with enlarging the wg opening that the flapper covers

the vf39 is the VIsta of ihi turbos.....they sucked all the way around

Most of the time it can be tuned out. ie: Not real boost creep. Like mentioned, real creep is mechanical.

I know that you know your stuff scotty, but that just isn't true. A car with no cats WILL smell and pollute more than one with cats. Especially when you're just sitting at a light or something. That definitely isn't healthy to be breathing in everytime you drive your car either... Because even if you can't smell it, you're constantly inhaling everything that a cat normally gets rid of. Ever driven behind a 60s muscle/pony car?

How does this compare to the Cobb downpipe? Better or worse.... Assuming both were catted
