I don't why a lot of people dismiss this popular mechanics story. They were right about a many other cars like MR. Read the last sentence...
it's not like very difficult for subaru to put a sti engine in a legacy shell...

2005 Subaru Legacy

The all-new Subaru Legacy is already for sale in Japan. But our shores are just starting to see it. The new car has an entirely updated chassis, body design and construction. And new materials and technologies will make the Legacy lighter than the current car. The Japanese version comes with either a normally aspirated or turbocharged 2.0-liter flat Four. Our car will have the bigger 2.5-liter Four, first in normally aspirated form. A turbocharged model will follow by about six months and, if you want the extra go, it should be worth the wait: The turbo will pack nearly 280 hp. Our sources within Subaru tell us that a higher-performance STi model with twin turbos and 350 hp will come a year later.

Just one more note on this so I wont hijack the thread to bad. Some insider type people have let it leak that the project is still on and the platform will be shared with the Miata replacement. Powered by a F/I version of the Regenisis, but not necissarily turbo.

Probably because they're 30hp off on a car that Subaru has had specs on for quite a while before the article was written. We at NASIOC knew more about the Legacy than PM does, 5 months before PM decided to write the article. PM is the last place I want to get my car news.

Right on Beaver. They're probably playing on that carconnection.com article like almost everyone else.
