Talking Just spent $70 to add some HP to my PC!

OK this may not seem like a big deal to anyone, but having a computer related career, I hate working on my own personal PC. So very rarely do I ever upgrade, or care about it as long as it works. Plus I'd rather spend my money on the RS.

Well the current 64MB Ram and 350mhz processor are finally long overdue for some sort of upgrade. So after tonight my home PC will be one heck of a powerhouse...

...A 500mhz processor and 256MB ram...the maximum my MB can handle...all for the low low price of $70. (Ok, I know it's not any ghz PC with 400mhz FSB, but c'mon I spend about 3 hours a week on my home PC )

If any of you are looking for cheap PC parts, check out http://www.tcwo.com they are right up the street from me!

No Matt, these guys are a legitimate dealer. The other IS guys here have been using them for a couple of years for their own personal systems. I almost bought a new Asus MB, power supply, GeForce2 Video card, Creative Labs 5.1 audio card and speakers and an Athlon 1.0ghz chip and it would've only been around $350.00

Cool! Those are the guys I bought my Tbird 1.2Ghz and heat sink from. I think I got my SBLive from them too. They have crazy prices on components, though I found hard drives cheaper elsewhere...

RAM is just super cheap these days. Pricewatch has PC133 128MB non ECC starting at 9 dollars. DDR Ram has been dropping like a rock also.

Yeah, RAM can be had for cheap but you have to watch out for the bargain basement stuff. I spent the extra $ and got Crucial ram so I could do CAS2 latency without a problem.

Crucial and Mushkin are the best RAM vendors on the market bar none.

I have a computer related question for you A+ guys out there, I cant find my book anywhere, but here goes:

What is one Long beep followed by two short beeps?

If I unplug my power cable and hit the button, I discharge my capicators, and then plug the cable back in and it boots fine.

Help I know it isnt normal.

thanks,
-justin

It means:

"Help me Justin, I'm sick."

Hehe, uhhh, no really I can't remember. Bad CMOS battery maybe?

I used to get one long and two short when my system would fail POST because the boot sector on my HD was corrupted, but it doesn't sound like you have that problem.

Xeno, how are thoose Gforce Cards?? I have heard a lot of mixed stuff about them. It seems video cards are going downhill, Diamond was bought out by another company, Voodoo is going under, and every game I try to run using an ATI card seems to have some type of problem

Have you guys seen the new Epox board with on board Raid?? From what I have heard it is pretty nice.

Post beep general rules:
Quote:
2,3, or 4 Beeps - Memory. The POST checks the first 64KB of main memory. If you hear 2,3 or 4 beeps, then either video or main memory has a problem. If the video is working, then there was a parity error in the first 64KB of system memory (low memory). Try switching SIMM's/DIMM's between memory banks. If a reboot generates 1 beep, then you have a bad memory module in the switched bank.

4 Beeps - Clock, 4 beeps can also mean a bad timer oscillator
Taken from Comptia's A+ Certified Computer Technician Manual, 2nd Edition

Hope that helps.
