'05 STi steering wheel wear & tear
Hey guys, before I take my car to the dealership, I wanted to ask your advice.
My steering wheel shortly after 10k miles on the car has started wearing and discoloring. The perforated leater on the sides and bottom is fine, it is the leather on the very top that's the problem. It basically would appear as though it's "rubbing off." Now, I've consulted the dealership in St. Louis over the phone. The service manager said that I should have a warranty to cover it, and that I should take it to the dealership here in Columbia, to have them look at it. Currently I have 25k miles on the car. I'm not too sure about the "interior" warranty, if there is one, and how long it lasts. Well I'm sure there is one, but what are the chances I get a new steering wheel out of this? All I do know is that my friends use the same interior cleaner, grip the wheel just like me , and some of which have three times the milage, and some less.. However, none of their steering wheels have this "wear and tear" on them. Unless I have some weird acrid sweat.. ? Ideas, Opinions, Comments, Thoughts? Jake.

Seems like it could be a 50/50 ordeal as far as the dealership replacing it. The wear and tear on steering wheels seem to vary from car to car. Like you said, everyone drives their car differently so the worn areas on the wheel itself will be in different areas. I will clean my wheel with Meguiar's Leather Cleaner/Conditioner regularly - and so far at 80K, it still looks really nice. There's no avoiding the shiny look of leather after it's worn in, but there are no rips or areas wearing off.

that should be warrantied because that is by no means a "normal wear and tear" part... brakes and clutches aren't covered for a reason, but this is.

I had this same issue with my '03 wrx. It looked like my fingers rubbed the leather away from the top of the steering wheel in the pattern of my hand.
Hasn't happened to the STI yet. |

The steering wheel, like the rest of the car is covered under the 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty under wear and tear. Take it to the dealer. (don't tell them what you use to clean it, just tell them it is wearing)

yes this is true.. i've had a clutch + flywheel replaced under warranty. thanks for the tip rexygirl. i went to the dealer today, and showed them the steering wheel - they told me to wait a while.. go figure either way it's gonna wear cause now i'm gonna grip it. good to know about breaks because i asked them about that, and the tech said he didn't know.. now i'm gonna hit them up for that too! might as well, right? paid a lot for the car and warranty as far as i'm concerned. this dealership hates me though, it's funny.. no one wants to help me at the service counter.. they never work on stis (which makes me nervous but oh well, anything they fubar will get fixed one way or the other) and it's a chrysler/ subaru dealership.. wish me luck! |

Your brakes have to be below a certain spec for them to do them under warranty. If you go in and tell them to replace your brakes, you will pay for them. Tell them they are noisy, and if they are below specs, they should replace them. The closer to the end of the warranty you are, the better chance you have.
