At this point my primary concern regarding any non-Subaru filter would be that the valves in the filter release at the pressure expected by the engine manufacturer.

That is my concern. I have read Subaru boxers move a lot more oil through the engine then other manufacturers.

That appears to be an issue that I have just started seeing mentioned. On the jeeps 2.5 and 4.0 the anti-drain back valve was an issue, the lower priced frams and basic purolators were poor in this area, on a cold startup it would take 15 seconds to build pressure, with Mobil1, KN, Purolator pure ones it would build to 60psi in under 5, that was with a horizontally mounted filter. I wonder how Subaru handles a vertically mounted, with the mouth facing down, maybe a one way valve at the mount point, don't know. Nor do I know how long it takes this engine to build pressure due to lack of a pressure gauge.

I'm just making these numbers up, but if a Subaru filter's bypass valve blows open at 25 PSI, then I don't want an aftermarket filter that blows open at 15 PSI because then it's in bypass mode and not filtering when it should be. Likewise, I don't want an aftermarket filter that doesn't blow open its bypass valve until 35 PSI because that might starve the engine of oil. |

I would think a lower pressure bypass valve is better than a higher pressure valve. I wonder what the service manual says about this. Just because the filter they used is 23psi doesn't necessarily mean THAT is there requirement.
My theory goes the same for a fuse. If you blow a 20 amp fuse its ok to replace with a 15 amp if the circuit will support it without blowing, but if you put a 30 amp fuse in you could fry something before the fuse blows. |

You either:
Get a lower bypass rated filter for good flow but less filtering. or Get a higher bypass rated filter for good filtering but less flow. or Stay in the middle and use the OEM filter. |

Most of the bypasses, at least in the jeep straights, are in the filter mounting boss area, once that one goes the filter is bypassed completely, oil will flow but not be filtered, never seen it happen though. The oil never leaves the block when it happens.

I'm just saying man, I seriously doubts lower pressure bypass valve is going to hurt anything. In theory, it shouldn't ever open anyways! |

I doubt you would really see any oil pressure differences either, but afaik those 2 filters are built to oem specs, everything else is close or well under. I would like to think your synthetic media would flow better, and I have time to kill at the dealer today so I will do some looking. So I'm that case lower bypass could be ok (as you stated) On engine start when cold the bypass probably opens most of the time Last edited by flyboy1100; 04-03-2013 at 02:41 PM. |

Or just choose a larger filter that doesn't need such a high bypass rating and enjoy higher pressure on the clean side.

NO THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Filtering air is one thing for a reusable filter, but nobody will ever convince me to re-use an oil filter, especially at the price they charge for one. I believe K&N has one of these too..... EDIT: Yep, here is the K&N "reusable" oil filter they say fits our cars. http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?prod=SS-1010 Last edited by jsteg; 04-03-2013 at 08:23 PM. Reason: Link |

^^ Agreed.
Holy crap, $220 for an oil filter! If I can buy Subaru/Roki filters for $7 each, then that $220 pays for 31 Roki filters. If I get 6500 miles/filter, then 31 filters would last me over 200,000 miles. I don't see how that product would compute for anyone! |

I'm with ya....even at $14/filter if you're using a royal purple or amsoil filter....still not worth it to me, and I just don't feel comfortable using an oil filter that's been "cleaned" with chemicals and dried with air. |

Saw this Autotrader.com ad. A used 2012 Sport Limited at a Lincoln/Ford dealership with a Motorcraft Oil Filter. I've searched and can't find a cross reference. I'm tempted the call this place tomorrow to find out what part# that filter is. It looks big in the picture.
