Unhappy snorkus removal issues

Has anyone had any bad experiences from reomoving the fender reservoir/snorkus. I have a panel filer in there now and removed the snorkus and recently have had idle troubles and got a brief CE light last night. From the filterbox back all of the intake remains stock. I have a MY99. ECU Resetting is not producing miracles Grrrrr. Help?

You have a leak behind the MAF sensor. If you opened the torque chamber, moved it or removed any of the breather hoses check them all.

Removal greatly improved the throttle response- big difference for me. Runs great since removal. Biggest problem was buttoning up the inside of the wheel well.

you guys are probably totally right with the air-leak theory. I removed the 'torque chamber' to replace the second filter, and I bet it's not sitting right. I'm psyched to go fix this....It's been bugging me for a while.

thanks again!

Sounds like the leak is your issue. If that doesn't work, PM me. I'm in the area and we can figure it out.

rjones -- I betcha you didn't seat the large chamber properly -- hence the leak. You have to seat the bottom of the "Lid" first to properly seal the box. Feel along the bottom of the chamber -- if you feel a gap or can pry it open from the bottom, it isn't sealed properly.

LaterZ!

Thumbs up

You guys were exactly right. I was ouside last night in the awful boston weather felling around underneath the second chamber, and no, I didn't seat the bottom of the box properly. This makes perfect sense with how the car was behaving-- idling high for a bit based on the air volumes the MAF sensor thought it was getting, and then switching down to a normal idle once the O2 sensor figured out that there was too much air was in the mix. Also, I wasn't getting the whistle at idle tha SilverSurfer was experiencing, and that was because the engine was drawing air through through the leak. Now it's fixed, idle is back to normal, and I have been blessed with an annoying whistle.

I love it when thigs make sense! Thanks again, y'all.

Personally the whistle doesn't bother me- almost reminiscent of a turbo. Besides, with my Sti WRX catback system I really can't hear it too much. Whatever annoyance you experience is more than made up by the performance gain

it's not really a whistle. It's more like some kinda suction sound you hear from a dirt devil vacuum. Pretty kewl.

See my other post I found the snorky pics and archived them to my computer.

Who took those anyway so I can give credit when I put the destructions up on my subaru page? (whenever I get off my lazy butt and do the graphics for it)

And my car already has squeaky brakes due to the metal master pads so a little more squeaky whine won't bother me. And if other people think I'm driving a beater then they have less incentive to steal it

Wow, replying to myself again. I need another hobby.

That snorkus is *evil*.

Took me 4 hours from start to finish and then at the end Autozone ordered me the
WRONG K&N panel filter. I was so pissed, but the gains are nice so far (even without the
K&N). The car revs up to redline much quicker and is more responsive. It also now has this VERY nice growl when I give it some gas. A dude in a boxster actually did a double take when I revved up while passing him at a turn(probably wondering *** a wagon was doing with a boxer engine). It sounds nice, and very little whine at idle (not noticeable with the hood down). I sealed off the fender hole with a piece of aluminum and used some expanding foam to seal the gaps in the fender well (yes I was careful with the stuff, didn't use much... just enough to keep water from spraying the intake).

Getting the fender off was the worst part, those little plastic screw thingies are just a pain in the ass. I think some engineer at subaru enjoys cruelty to DIY'ers.

"Engineer: How are you gentlemen ? !!"
"Engineer: ALL YOUR FENDER-WELL-COVER ARE NOW BELONG TO US !!"

Sigh....I had to do it.

Can't wait till I get my stromung and the proper K&N in.

Thanks for all the advice in this forum and I am no longer obsessed with removing my snorkus.
