Post Brake Fluid

O.K. those that are curious.... I've been preaching and using Castrol GTLMA Dot 4 brake fluid for about 10 years now, with HUGE success with it, including my race cars. (those that have been to my house, have seen my tube frame 510, and realize how serious a car that is. That's all I used to use in that car, and it could outbrake almost EVERY single car around. Stuff is available through Canadian Tire, Lordco, (or PDM... I stock a case of it all the time)

Stuff is cheap ($5 per bottle) and works awesome for street application.

I don't recommend going into more exotic brake fluids unless you are doing track days.

You are way better off bleeding your brake twice a year with Castrol Dot 4 GTLMA than using Agip or Motul. (I do stock and sell those too...but only for track customers)

Thumbs up

That's another one of those "Wal-Mart" available DOT-4 brake fluids that some of the US guyz have been using.

If it's good enough for Don's tube-frame 510 monster racer, it'll be more than good enough for me!

Thanx Don for your input!

Just got back from Lordco on Kingsway -- I was asking around about DOT-4 brake fluids, and the guy there recommended the GTLMA DOT-4 fluid. I asked him how much it was and he punched it into his computer and said around 4 bucks. The bottle IS small though -- only 354ml, so I don't know how many we'll need to do one car. Anybody know what the capacity of our brake system is?

If you are flushing out the complete system 2 bottle would be more than enough for one vehicle.

Yeah, but how big of a bottle are you talking about? A 2 litre pop-bottle size of brake fluid, or a small pop-bottle size thing?

Hi Don,

How good is Agip? What model of Agip you are talking about? My dealer is selling Agip DOT4 1 litre for C$6 only (don't know the exact parts number), should I go for it?

thx,

etam

is there a cheap way of changing the brake pedal feel of the rs? the only other car that feels like that is the fireflys.
a customer of ours came in about a year ago with the same problem on his F250p/u, he pulls a boat. after talking to wagner tech,I mod a master cyl from a F350 desiel, and he said his brake felt better then when it was new.
so is there a master cyl from another car that would fit the rs, without major mods, that would improve the feel?

The newer Imprezas all have a dual-stage brake booster, hence the soft pedal feel -- I guess the Japanese assume us (fat and lazy) North Americans want an easy to drive car (hence the slow steering ratio, less powerful car -- when the RS came out, soft brake feel, etc.) -- of course I'm making major generalizations. Anywayz, the older Imprezas came with a single-stage brake booster which makes the brake pedal feel more stiff. It does NOTHING to enhance actual braking forces -- just braking feel. I believe you can get them from SPD Tuning (http://www.spdusa.com). The MY98's needs a different (and cheaper in price) master brake swap.

HKscooby: nah...i doubt it will make a big diff...especially u have MY01?

u have to change brake fluid once a everywhile...if u have heavy foot on ur brake all the time...u have to do it more often...moisture will build up when the brake fluid overheats and it will give u a soft pedal feel...

brakefluid changes is just a basic maintainence...upgrading to DOT 4, or DOT 5/5.1 is just one of the cheapest way to prevent the brake fluid overheat too fast...(DOT 3 has standard for up to 460 degree F and DOT 4 has standard for 460 degree F and over, they are both alcohol based while DOT 5/5.1 is silicone based and is not recommanded on ABS system)...

a pretty basic upgrade for brake will be including stainless steel brakelines, performance brake pads and good quality brake rotors...make sure u have ur fluid in good condition at all time and don't be cheap to replace pad (ie: front and rear both only have 20% will give u a low pedal feel when u brake "hard")...

i am now using only the Project Mu front pad on my gf's RS and it works great...still waiitng for the brakelines from the gb and i will install all w/ the rear pads and changes the brake fluids to DOT 4 too...(yeah...i am still using DOT 3 on her car)...
