Default looking for cheap direct replacement speakers

i have an 04 sti and bought a decent kenwood cd head unit for some sounds. i am currently using stock wrx speakers with it and although it sounds alright, if i crank it the speakers sound like ass (as many of you know).

for the life of me, i can't find a set of cheap components for the front. i don't need anything great because i am going to be running them off the deck power which isn't much (22rms advertised). so i ruled matched components out and am now considering buying 6.5's and tweeters seperately and using the stock wiring but i can't find any 6 1/2" woofers... they are all woofer / tweeter / midrange combos.

i need something cheap that is an upgrade from the stock setup, but nothing crazy. i would like to bolt them into the factory position and forget about it. if i spend $100 on 6 speakers that's fine, but i can't stress this enough, i REALLY just want something better than the stock wrx speakers without a hassle.

any advice?

What do you have against coaxials? My advice is without a doubt to look at either some infinity reference series coax front and rear or maybe Alpine Type-S. You can get a two pair of either for probably $125 shipped off ebay brand new. And I promise they will sound way better than the stock speakers.

i really don't have anything against coaxials, but with tweeters and coaxials wouldn't the highs be overpowering in the front? or are you suggesting that i ditch the tweeter idea and just go with coaxials?

if you want something simple and cheap, you really need to go into coaxial. you can't just put a 6½ woofer and a tweeter in the stock location. the stock crossover system is just not adequate to do so, and it will sound like crap.

This looks like a good deal for two pair of the Infinity References (you always gotta watch for a cheap price on the second shipped set)...

And here is a decent deal on the Alpines. You could search for a little better deal (again though shipping is typically outrageous while the speakers cost half the price of shipping)...

nice, this is the kind of info i am looking for.

so if i ditched the tweeters and went with coaxials, would i just hook the coaxials up to the factory 6.5 speaker wire and call it a day?

I had the factory tweeters and some Eclipse Coaxials hooked up in my 02 WRX for a while and I didn't think the highs were overpowering. And I am very sensitive to highs.
