Another "What should I launch at" thread!
hello,
I posted this over in motorsports and they said to "Ask all the power provers" because you're more knowing about the straights....I know there are plenty of threads probably already floating around for this, but hey, I gotta get my own specific replies, too, y'know!! I plan on seeing what my car (05 sti) is capable of in the 1/4 very soon, and was wondering if someone could point me to the right RPM range I should be launching at.... I have a TurboXS Turbo-back (Catless) and Cobb OTS Stage2 right now... (and new tires, ecsta spts, for whatever that's worth, if anyone has any experience launching on those.) I've launched on deserted roads, and gotten 4.7 0-60, and a 13.4 1/4, but I honestly don't have much launching experience under my belt.. These times should clean up given the track's stickier, yeah?? Any help/advice would be mad appreciated! Someone there said I should side-step it at 6500rpms... I like myself too much to be doing that, I was under the impression I should be doing it lower than that???

That person would be an idiot. With a stage 2 setup you should be launching anywhere between 4500-5500 RPM using the quick-slip method and it all depends on traction. Try rocking/pumping the throttle quickly between 5000-5500rpm and then come off the clutch smoothly, slipping it slightly (but never stopping your foot from moving up.) Keep on the throttle while you're doing this then floor it as the car leaves the line and the clutch is fully up. You should get a slight chirp and be scambling for 2nd. This should net you a 1.7x 60ft. YMMV.
Also, you should also have your stage 2 tune verified. My 05 STi with the OTS Cobb Stage 2 map only made 8whp (yes 8) and 50wtq over stock. It felt very strange to drive that car. Instant torque that would break the wheels loose and then fall flat on its face (relatively speaking.) After my conservative lapping day ProTune, I put down 30whp and 65wtq over stock but my torque curve was smooth and boost held on longer. Honestly, if you're going to the strip for the first time, prepare to be disappointed until you get the hang of it. |

spay IC for 10 sec to rid HS
rev to 4500 5500 and bounce now in a swift but controlled motion let the clutch out and right before engagement mash down the throttle at the same time dont take foot off gas at all when shifting just have a fast foot on the clutch letting off the gas makes you lose full boost for a short time so dont do it.... do all this right and you should be in the 12.8-13 range in a stock sti. |

i'll take advantage of the abandoned road, and give it a couple attempts..
all that's been said so far is essentially what i've been doing... What's "Stage 2 tune verified" mean?? Whatever it is, I feel like that's the case, haha... |

Sorry, I was not trying to be a jerk. There are just a lot of people on here that think just because they slap so engine management on the car everything is fine. Good luck on the launching. The only way to improve your time is practice. Once you feel it you'll be putting down 1.6-1.7 60fts all day long

What RMP should the engine return to after shifting into 2nd? 3rd? When I tried launching at ~5200 RPMs my car returned to ~5200 in 2nd and maybe a little higher in 3rd after shifting at around 6700RPMS. Is this normal?

dude i dont know what you are all saying, but the trick is in a 05 sti is rev
to ~ 4500-5500 rpms let clutch out and floor it at the same time, then dont let off the gas till your done racing (QUICK CLUTCH FOOT) |

Get launch control and you can flat foot shift all day, I usually launch my WRX with launch control at about 5200 rpms. With regular street tires though I was losing grip and spinning all four tires, so I could probably bring it down a little. Dunno about an STi though.

what you said about 5000 - 5500 rpm launch is not really tru it really depends on your power band well i launch and rev around 4300 - 5000rpm and my tires basicly jus spins on the stock re070 on track or street if launch higher i basicly do a stand still 4 wheel burn out then bam it hooks |

I might be... but that's one of the dumbest questions ever (especially if you are a car enthusiast) If you're not... then you should've specified in your post.
Just search! www.f-body.org/gears/ Look a simple gear calculator. Put your gear ratios and that's it. You get mph/rpm for every gear. |
