Default silicone spray on weather strippings

Are there any tangible benefits of spraying all the weather strippings with silicone a few times a year? have been doing it every fall and spring, but I'm curious to have more substantial info on the effect of a silicone spray on rubber (and how long it lasts...)

No, i didn't think anyone would spray one door for 10 years and the post a photo of the left and right side, showing a dryed, falling apart, cracked piece of rubber next to the "as new" siliconed one..

At the same time though, i'm not a chemist, so I'm trying to find a basis for a word-of-mouth alleged maintenance routine that I perform like a brainless monkey.

silicone litterally breaks down rubber..........that is a bad idea.

or use Lexol Vinylex, this can normally be found at advance auto. thats the only thing i will use on my interior and rubber weather stripping. armorall has silicon in it, the silicon makes everything shiny but over time it will ruin weather stripping and dash boards.....ask any high dollar detailer.

I too am curious about this. I have not been doing this and sometimes when rolling the front windows down I get a pretty bad squeak. I don't know if it is from build up on the window that I haven't gotten off while washing, or dried rubber seals. Maybe the silicone spray would help. I don't know if that would have negative long term affects on the rubber though. It seems to be coming from the vertical rubber seal where the mirrors are on the A-pillar.

^^ lol.

Petroleum distillates harm rubber, and guess what's inside your spray can as a propellant? Supposedly, if you spray the silicone onto a clean rag first and then wipe it on it's ok because the propellant evaporates away.

But I personally don't mess around with that stuff since I always have 303 AP or 1Z Gummipflege on hand.

What's up with the 303AP? It comes out in all sorts of threads, and always seems to be praised...

Bluefoton, for what it's worth, I have used 100% Silicone spray on all my vehicles' rubber seals since 1971. I've kept several cars for 10+ years, and I've never seen degradation of the rubber. I am convinced that the silicon protects the rubber, and reduces the chance of a freezing rain bonding the rubber to the car frame, keeping me from getting in.
