Default I've owned my WRX for 10 years now ...

[actually later this fall it will be 10 years] and i was thinking of doing something special for the bugeye wagon's 10 year b-day.

after 202k+ miles, it still drives like the day i bought it. original clutch even.

so any suggestions?

i'm thinking:

a) a JDM Ver 8 swap

b1) Build a motor (possibly a 2,5 block)

b2) new clutch, and finally go to Cobb stage 2 with the parts i've had in the garage for years now

c) fill 'er up with a tank of hi-test and a slap on the ass and hit some more gravel roads

-PS - i've only owned my 1999 sedan for 2 years lol

can I get a combination of C, then D and then A once she gives up the ghost?

I voted A...

OR swap 02 wrx motor into said 99 impreza in conjunction with A to the WRX...then B and C happen to the 99 Impreza and you can do D with either of them

LOL! we should keep the 99 out of it since it is a full JDM Version 5 STI ...

yes, i know what that's like (see 1999 comment above). but the version 8 would beat up on the version 5, except the GG is heavier than the GC ....

B- rebuild engine with good rods and pistons, new clutch, bigger turbo and supporting stuff.

The V8 swap isn't a good match to the usdm 5 speed. So unless you can buck up and get a short geared jdm trans, you might not like it.

Yeah, i hear you had a short ratio trans you were enjoying... were you going to trade someone, or do i remember wrong?

the 99 is a 4.44, pretty short but iirc yours was even closer ratios.

i guess it's really more a dream than a real possibility, but if i did the Ver 8 engine, i would love to do the full tranny as well. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ lol

Yeah, I'm selling my jdm trans. It would be a decent ratio match for an 8k rpm Ver 8 engine. My little EJ20G is out of breath at 6.5K rpm so it's not so hot. I'm putting in an 02 usdm wrx trans instead.

Fixed

The Ver7/8 swaps are just so easy and tempting on any 02-03...now that I have an 02 Bugeye for a DD, Ver 7 or 8 opensource ECU and heads on a 'mild' 2.1 stroker.

The TD05HR-16G 10.5 is already sitting in my garage

If I had kept my car long enough to retire it from autox it would have gotten a USDM STi swap - EJ257+6 speed. I love the EJ207 but ultimately it will be more of a pain in the ass to own than a USDM motor that everyone has parts for. It revs higher and that's cool, but the fact that the USDM motor doesn't /need/ to rev that high is just as nice. One of those engines with bolt ons should be plenty adequate for street use

Of course no matter what you do it will not be as cool as the '99.

now all i need is a JDM Evo V ...

thanks, yeah the 99 is awesome and i hope to keep it for a long long time, but i feel the same way about the plain jane bugeye wagon too. i dont know why i love driving it so much. it would be nice to have a bit more oooomph and still smooth cruising on the highway and fun to chip up the paint on the gravel roads around here. (esp since i live on a gravel road)

Was just thinking about this thread and how sad it is that I couldn't hang on to a single car for 10 years. Gotta give you credit where it's due. Been through 3 cars over the last year myself.

Still, just get it dirty.
