Default The depressing current state of music - a rant

Why is it that it seems lika a LOT of the songs coming out nowadays seem to have "credits" built-in? For example, that stupid "one-two-step" song annoys the snot outta me. First of all, the first few lines are nothing but opening credits! At first, I didn't know what a "jazzy fizzle producshizzle" was until someone explained that that was just another part of the opening credits, and gave me a rundown on who Jazze Pha is. Listening more carefully, the end of the song even says "For the hearing-impaired: a Jazzy Pha production" What the heck? "Hearing impaired" my foot! More like speaking "impizzled"!! (is that right?) Along these same lines, a different time I heard a song (that just HAD to have the credits built-in) it referred to some named "Urr-shurr". Who the heck is "urr-shurr?" Of course, I asked someone, as usual, and it was apparently "Usher" which makes more sense. How do they get "urr-shurr" out of "Usher" and why would they have someone with such a speach impediment actually singing in the radio version?

And people wonder why I leave my radio on either Oldies, NPR, or classical.

What kind of crap are you listening to? Ignore the self-stroking crap and listen to some good music.

Try out www.woxy.com if you're into streams.

This is the crap I get stuck listening to at work. When fixing someone's PC, I'm subjected to whatever music they have on their radio at the time.

Radio rap is garbage and is aimed to appeal to the dumbest generation in decades. What do you expect from a youth today that is not only ignorant but proud of it.

Everytime I have to justify my liking of "hip-hop" to someone I always start with the opening line of "you can't listen to the crap that's on the radio". I know that no one here asked me to justify but I will say that there is plenty of good, intelligent, well thought out, and very comprehensive hip-hop. It doesn't get put on the radio because, well, it just doesn't sell enough. The main-stream now needs guns, bling, hoes, and drugs to be accepted and those artists that have not embraced the ignorance have been effectively shuned.

In my opinion the problem with current music is that its too focused. My hypothesis is that record label executives are unwilling to sign a band that doesn't appeal to a very specific demographic. So unless you fall into the category of "angry white adolescent mad at his parents for not letting him borrow the car for the prom" or "sassy black teenage girl looking for love in all the wrong places" you don't have much to listen to.

99% of rock on the radio can be summarized as "I'm tougher than you, I'm angrier than you, and I had a rougher childhood than you."

99% of rap on the radio can be summarized as "I get more bitches than you, I get more money than you, I can smoke more weed than you."

Turn the radio off, turn the tv off. I did that long ago. Don't bitch and moan about it, just turn it off. It's a choice, and it's what mainstream America wants.

Internet radio lets you listen to only what you want, when you want, for free.

The funny thing is, I thought SIRIUS radio would be better about not just playing cookie-cutter rap but I was sorely mistaken. I just listen to jazz and sports now on SIRIUS. Some of the hip-hop stations aren't that bad but the good songs are far and few in between

Don't have cable... There's nothing on anyways. I have a few shows I watch and that's it.

My only radio is in the car, and Even then, it's either on classical, oldies, or NPR. I might put on AM talk radio or a CD, but that's it.

I only complain about what I overhear, in the few situations where I have no control over what I am listening to.

There are still many great hip hop artists, but you won't hear them on today's radio. These guys today have zero lyrical ability or skill. Most of them don't even have a DJ, and other people write their rhymes.

Pathetic.

that crap annoys me. even worse, when they're in interviews and they're like "desert storm! desert storm!" or "juh-juh-juh G-yoooooooo-nit!"

there is a comedian who did a riff on this . . . he was like "you never heard the beatles saying "apple records!" at the beginning of a song. you never heard the isley brothers being all "teaneck in the hooooouse!" did you?"

come to think of it, it may have been chappelle.

How could a thinking person imagine that?

You don't think that averaging the listening tastes of millions is going to water it down from averaging the listening tastes of thousands?

I don't listen to radio much because, seriously, but aren't there any pirate radio stations out there? The pirates are not kissing some big corporate ass or public radio PC-ness vagina.

So, you'd be able to hook me up with a copy of the Fugees singing "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" without all the crap at the beginning?

/me doesn't care that it was in the Conspiracy Theory soundtrack and doesn't want to be reminded every time he hears it.

It's just the current fad that's running rampant in popular hip-hop. In the nineties, a popular trick was to mention the year the song was released in the song (Ex: "...for the nine-tres," "Cashmoney Records gettin' bizzy in the nine-nine!"). Apparently, teh Y2K cured that problem (I guess it doesn't sound as good to say "...for the Oh one" or "the aught-deuce").

Look at songs that you consider classics. They are usually timeless and speak to a universal audience. This allows the song to survive beyond the singer/song-writer.

"Artists" today are only interested in making money now, not creating something worth remembering. In songs today, you're likely to hear the current date, the producer's name, advertising for several brand names of vehicles or jewelry, any other artists' names who the singer/rapper is trying to promote, the name of the album that the song is from, etc.

But it's not just in their music that these "artists" have incorporated shameless self-promotion. Have you ever seen Busta Rhymes, for example, present (not accept, but present) an award at an awards show—he takes the opportunity to promote his latest album or one of his protegés—very tacky.

The idea came when I saw the "Underground Hip-hop" channel listed and described as "the best of East coast underground" To me the screams artists like Talib, Mos, High and Mighty, Mike Zoot, third eye clique, etc. Meh, it was worth a shot

Current mainstream hip-hop is a 100% materialistic, superficial pissing contest. It is a waste of all things human. I hope it dies in a spontaneous Louis Vuitton fabric combustion.

Ever notice while listening to a mainstream hip-hop station that the song rotaion is the most pathetic playlist ever? I thought mainstream rock stations played isht to death, but take a station around here like HOT 97 (of the Tsunami song fame) and in the span of a hour, the playlist will have rotated 2-3 times. That's right, imagine hearing the same songs 3 times in a hour. Its a sad reflection on the state of that industry and its consitiuents if that's what thy want to hear. I guess rap is soo volatile, that they don't even get the proverbial 15 minutes of fame, thiers is concatenated to only 5 minutes.

Buh-bye rap. :waving kitty:

I hit up college radio quite often. I have several colleges and universities in this area within broadcast range of my daily commute and cen generally hear some decent stuff. The green DJ's generally aren't the best but there's at least the purity of non-corporate guided content. Even music genre's that normally don't interest me i'll give a shot to since at least its different than the repetitive drole content on the mass corporate stations.
