And it came from Dave! I am still in shock. And I am so onboard! If I read "I installed a (BOV/MBC/Turbo back with no EM on an 04+) and nothing ever happened to me" post I will need a new keyboard.

would it be possible in instate some kind of system that the users of the site ranks other users based on the helpfulness of their answer? Or something to that extent?

not a bad idea, but I have a feeling that would be abused to no end.

Yeah, I think you are right.

I wonder if there is a system that will allow it register +1/-1 to your account based on the percentage of people who answer. Like, if 80% of the total votes submitted say it was a good answer, it will register it +1. something like that, anyways.

For some reason over the past 2 weeks I have seen a HUGE increase of people answering posts with just horribly incorrect info. Not all horribly info, some just wrong. Either way....

I have ended up being a bit of a dick in a few of these situations, and I apologize (a little anyway ), simply because its getting old real fast. There have always been a few responses with bad info here and there, but as of about the last 2 weeks (this week has been really bad), it has just gone out of control. Almost every thread has people just dishing out bad info as fact. If it continues on this path we are a month away from people actually believing that a BOV and CAI are a great way to make power.

Here is the thing, when someone asks a question, they need the correct answer, and in some cases, the answer they get could lead them to either fix a problem, or create a MAJOR problem with a failure.

I am not asking people to not respond at all, who the hell am I to ask that?

What I am asking is that, in the interest of keeping good, up to date info out there for all to benefit from is this.

When someone asks a question, if you do not KNOW, beyond a shadow of doubt, that you have the CORRECT answer, please dont answer, or if you arent 100% sure, then somehow indicate that your info MAY not be dead on. The wrong answer you give, may end up costing someone time/money/effort. Or it may just spread more bad info, which isnt a good thing either.

A reply that is a guess, is FINE!!! By all means do it. But for the love of god, EXPLAIN THAT ITS A GUESS!

Honestly guys, please dont take this wrong, this isnt me trying to be a dick, this is me trying to help keep good info out there for all to benefit from. There are two types of people that come into the Newbie forum.
1. Those who need an answer
2. Those who want to help.

If you are giving out bad info, you arent helping. I know we all want to help people out, and we all have something to say (lord knows we all know that about me ) but please, for the good of all, make sure you are giving out good info M'kay?

Thanks for your time, flame away. I am sure somehow this post makes me an a-hole
Nice one.
On TEH INTARNETS everyone is an anonymous genius.
Cutting out responses people base on things they simply imagine is a good move. A lot of places issue a temporary ban for users dishing out bull***** as fact...

I mean dont NOT post, if you have an idea or thought on it, POST IT! But just make sure you indicate in some clear way that you are maybe guessing or why you are thinking that your answer is the way to go.

If no one but the people that 100% know ever replied, this place would get boring fast.

Just dont guess and post it as fact

Bottom line is, someone giving out imagined information might lead to someone else breaking a piece of very expensive equipment and is the opposite of what a place like this should be doing. The fact that it's even an issue surprises me a great deal I have to say. I'd never offer advice without being 100% on what I was saying.

Even if they dont cause a part to fail, they could end up (and I have seen this happen several times) taking someone who is looking for power gains, and convince them to buy a part that will do no good (bov, cai on a wrx, catback on any subby) which means they caused someone to waste money for little gain, or worse, a loss in power.

I am going to start keeping a record of names of offenders in this thread. I have my first name already. This will serve as a list of people to not bother listening to.

*EDIT*

Thinking more about this, I am FAR too lazy to keep the list fully up.

Ill add names as they happen and I feel like taking the effort.

That's because this is a GOOD post and doesn't make you look like an A$$ at all... You should see how "rude" I am to idiots on the SVX Forums... We've got people over there trying to throw 20" wheels on the SVX and people telling them to use parts from other cars that obviously don't fit or are bad for the car... Ehhh, just a bunch of misinformed people out there... My goal is to set them straight no matter what

I agree. This forum has always provided great advice due to a passionate user base that loves their cars and spends numerous hours learning every little detail about them. I would hate to see an influx of bad info that destroys all the great information available.

Go Dave now!

Awesome post, just saw it. I always loved how you put n00bs in their place.

I have also found myself going less and less into the general forums, just because of the points stated.

To the OP of this thread, the answer to your question is yes.

Yes, a BOV does make that whooshing sound between gears when your turbo is making boost.

Sorry, got confused. Saw BOV in your post, and thought it was another noobie asking the dreaded BOV questions.

Perhaps if there were a "Nasioc 101" orientation that all new members had to run thru before being allowed to post, we would see a lot less of the same questions that keep getting answered badly, and would severely deter this new breed of forum spammers from clogging our boards with ridiculously priced merchandise that no one can take seriously. Its a win/win situation for the rest of us on the boards, and gives the noob members a jump start about the correct use of the forums when they have questions.

The site could also adopt a no spoonfeeding policy, and just reinforce the fact that anything that can be done has most likely already been done and covered, and is only a search button away from being discovered.

I like the idea of rating people based on helpfulness. You could do a system where you vote on people like on vendor satisfaction or whatever, but have it so only moderators can vote, or moderators and gurus maybe.

Or you could create a new member level: Post Whore.

You cant include gurus in the list of people who vote though. Guru means you post A LOT in non OT forums. It doesnt mean you know anything about anything. Although generally you have to have been here a long time to post enough to hit guru, which hopefully would at least get you past the point of not understanding that pretty much all cais are bad and such.

Personally I hate the "specialist" and 'Guru" titles. They indicate a knowledge level, and they shouldnt. I have seen posts where someone had 4-5 great answers, but wouldnt listen, and actually said "I want to wait to see what a guru says before I believe a specialist"

True. I find myself looking at join date and member number for more of an indication of credibility.

Not that I'm a great example of it .

This is a very good idea. I have always thought is was common sense to not post on a subject one knows nothing about but apparently it's beyond the understanding of a fair number of people.
I would also like to add that I abhor the postwhoring going on in the for sale sections, particularly the private car for sale section. I don't understand why people have to give their opinions on the worth of a seller's car. We're all big boys and girls here and should be able to decide if we want to spend a certain sum for a certain car. Personally the only time I can posting to for sale threads are friendly bumps for cars I like, a question about a really nice mod or part on the seller's car or if I see something drastically wrong that would be misleading (which hasn't happened yet).
