Just an FYI: I've been riding Attitash a lot lately and it's dry but still crazy fun. Some rain would definitely help keep the berms solid. They let you cut in front of all the families in line for the Alpine Slide so there is almost no waiting. It's worth a drive up, but bring your armor because the trails are rocky and technical. After you're done, you can go swim in the Saco to cool off (or ride their water slides if you like that stuff), then get a beer and food at the Moat Mountain Brewery in North Conway. A perfect day.

Just talked to someone who went to Bretton Woods for lift access riding. Don't bother going there because apparently it's a total joke.

I love that area. I have a house in the woods up behind the covered bridge on 302. get up, fish, mountain bike all day then go swimming, then eat what you caught in the AM....perfect day.

ya i use a 2.5 minion F front and back, maxxis 3D compound usually if I can get my hands on them. i use the minion F in the rear too because it corners well and is really predictable in a drift. no need for braking knobs in the rear

man... you downhill guys are freakin nuts...

I used to ride some xcountry races here and there back in my day (few years ago)...

but I've had way too many broken collar bones/ribs/sternum's etc etc to venture out on a downhill course again...

sucks too....cuz In xc I always blew past on the DH

thinkin about picking up another XC bike though... whats this I hear about the new full suspension bikes having a locking rear suspension ???

You're kidding about the locking rear suspension, right? Definitely nothing new, but still very effective nonetheless. I use the lockout on my fork and rear shock on my XC mtn. bike when climbing smooth trails or while on the road heading to a trailhead.

Riding DH helps develop technical skills that a lot of pure XC riders lack.

yeah aint that the truth... I came over to mountin biking from riding BMX street, and dirt jumping, and was completely shocked as to most mountain bikers can't even freakin bunyhop !

i was flying down the hill one day @ a group ride, where there was a fallen log in the trail, maybee 18'' high..... well there was a bunch up in the pack as people stopped to kinda hobble over this realativly small log..... I just went around them @ full speed and hopped over the freakin thing ..... and they wonder why I ride with my seatpost so low

Two years ago, I was coming back from a ride on Cranmore Ski Area in North Conway and there was an XC MTB race near the base lodge. The course went down a very small flight of stairs before heading off towards the woods. At least half of the riders went over their bars and crashed on the first lap, so the officials quickly changes the course to bypass the stairs. I shook my head in disbelief and headed home.

wow. well as most downhill racers say...a downhiller has the ability and fitness to finish a XC race, but a XC rider wouldn't even be able to finish a DH run. as for mtn bikers not being able to bunny hop...yea i've seen the same thing. a lot of new downhillers go out and buy all the latest gear and have no clue what they r doing. what people don't realize is that the suspension is there for mostly corner and brake traction; at least when it comes to racing. the majority of the bumps you can just take with your arms and legs.

I've never really had the opportunity to try any sort of downhill stuff. I got myself into biking and haven't been to that many parks, etc.. so I do mainly XC sort of stuff. I ride basically only at Borderland state park (because it's only minutes away from my condo) and some of the hiking trails are good XC trails (nobody really hikes them) and there's a decent NEMBA trail as well. I'm sure if I got to try some DH stuff I'd really like it, but if I tried it now I'd surely be a sweet noob at it crashing into stuff. I can hold my own pretty well doing XC stuff but I know it doesn't involve the same sort of skill a lot of DH does. My bike isn't anything crazy but it gets me by fine. I just swapped all the components over from my old Stumpjumper onto the new frame, because I broke a small tab on the SJ frame and I wanted a full suspension frame anyways so I just took the opportunity to do so. I want to eventually convert to disc brakes but my V's are doing well so I'm in no real rush.

How do you like that Riddick? I was eyeballing the Sette Relic frame to do a swap-over as well.

Best thing to do is go to a ski area that has lift access riding, rent one of their big rig DH bikes, and have fun beating on it all day. Some places also rent armor and full face helmets so you don't have to shell out $200+ for that stuff.

Not a bad idea - I might have to try that. I'll probably end up doing it next season as I'm too broke as it is right now.

I like it a lot. For the money, it's hard to beat. I was riding a hardtail Stumpjumper M4, so going from that to this is night vs. day on some of the more aggressive XC trails. I bought mine from Pricepoint for (IIRC) $369? - something like that. It's a bit heavier than my SJ frame but it has all the suspension components in the rear so I was expecting it. I was looking at the Relic too but I figured since I'm not as techno-savvy with bikes as I am with car stuff, I could live with a gas shock vs. a coil spring. If (or when) I really get into it more, I'd probably look at more pricey equipment. My swapover from my Stumpjumper went over pretty easy... just had to get a few new parts (seatpost, front derailleur [old one was bottom pull... new one had to be top pull - I miss my XTR!], and some new shifter and brake cables.). I also managed to mess up one of the bearings in my bottom bracket when swapping it into the new frame but that was just due to my own stupidity probably.
