Default C5 Wheel Armour sealant.

i recently had my Work Emotions powder coated this color:

i've had a neon green set of wheels before, and it was a pain in the ass to keep clean. i used Sonax, a brush, and a power washer to clean them. it seemed to do the trick. after each was i used the Armour All WHEEL PROTECTANT. its the little stuff that comes in the spray can, and it kept the brake dust off the wheels for quite some time until it started to build up again, and it was easier to wash off. however there was still a build up on the wheels after a while in the barrels.

i came across this stuff here:

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=189099

seems to be a sealant that is supposed to last up to a year. now i know it won't actually keep it from building up, but the wheels are only on for the summer, so i would wash them before i put them away.

i'm now trying to decide what to to to the wheels before they go on the car, as they have a fresh powder coat.

should i coat them in a wax i use on the car, wheel wax(which i heard is hit or miss) or do i apply this C5 Wheel Armour. either way i'm going to use the armor all wheel protectant on top of what ever is on the wheel, but i wonder if sonar and a power washer will simply eat right throughout this sealant.

any suggestions would be great, however i'm not changing to a lower dusting pad, or spraying pam.

thanks,

-ivan

I had neon orange wheels and found that a strong coat of wax and a buff after I got them powder coated did the trick.

Ive been using GTechniq's C4 on various trim bits of my own cars for a few months now and have been relatively satisfied with its performance. I can see your apprehension of applying a semi-permanent coating like their C5 while still using wheel cleaners, etc. The stuff ain't cheap and may not be resistant to harsher cleaners/methods.

Personally, I have had good results with a sealant called FK1000P on wheels, exhaust tips, etc. It sheds contamination better than most other products I have tried and is pretty resilient. 2 coats will last months for me and regular washes can typically be accomplished with a car wash soap and light agitation.

Something else I have been using is Optimum Opti-Coat. Its what is currently on the painted panels of my wifes Forester. However, unlike GTechniq, OC is permanent. ....meaning you can have to abrade the product (ie use a polish/compound) in order to remove it. It will likely replace FK1000P as my wheel protectant. Another advantage is that it is resistant to harsher cleaners/chemicals so any products safe for clearcoated surfaces shouldnt affect OC either.

thanks for the info! i think i'm going to get a thick coat of wax and the opti-coat.

question though, does it need to cure? and will it ruin powder coat, or kill the shine? some of the sealants i noticed have a dull luster to them.

bottles, what wax did you use?

i just want to have these sitting pretty with little build up, they come off in the fall and will be thoroughly washed when they are off.

No problem but I need to clarify a couple of things....

First, Opt-Coat is a stand-alone product and must be applied to a clean surface. ....meaning free of all other products, waxes, etc. That also goes for products that go over OC since they don't tend to stick well or last that long.

OC should be safe on powder coated surfaces but I would try to verify this first. It does need to cure after the initial 15-30 minute set time (24 hours IIRC before washing, etc.). ....driving should be fine though.

I never noticed a dulling effect with OC but as with any product, YMMV. IMO/IME, it tends to have the typical reflective, shiny look many sealants do (not the depth/warmth like some waxes).

I wont lie to you.... OC is a bit of a commitment. As I said before, it is a permanent product and will require abrasion to remove. This means that application must be done correctly to avoid any "high/heavy spots" that may cause a look of smearing/residue in that area. If you have used any WOWA sealant like Opti Seal, UPGP or Z-CS, you would definitely know what Im talking about. Adequate lighting is key during application and an eye for detail. This product also doesn't fill so any correction you need to do should be fully addressed prior.

I would suggest doing some reading about Opti Coat on a site like Autopia.org before making a final decision.

Have you tried armor all's wheel protectant spray? My wheels have are a bronze clear coat. With the wheel protectant spray the fronts stay nice and shinny for a long time (as long as they don't get wet). When I forget to use the spray my wheels show brake dust within a few days.
