Default VW Golf R 400

It seems VW can provide the Golf R with the kind of HP that Subaru won't for the STI.

MotorAuthority stated that: Regular Volkswagen Golf R not quite powerful enough for you? You might be in the market for the Golf R 400 then, a hotted-up version of the regular Golf R with close to 400 horsepower. The car is being unveiled at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show in China, but it's still a concept. The actual total is 395 horses (400 refers to its metric horsepower measurement, PS) and performance is impressive for a compact hatchback: Volkswagen quotes a 0-62 mph time of 3.9 seconds, and a super-sedan baiting top speed off 174 mph. In order to reach this kind of performance, the car's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder has received significant tuning, and an electro-mechanical Haldex multi-plate clutch helps transfer the shove to each wheel.
Volkswagen insiders suggest the car could weigh less than 3,100 lbs (over 150 lbs less than the current Golf R) thanks to a stripped-out cabin and carbon fiber panels. The latter manifest themselves visually with wider wheel arches--a nod to the 1988 Rallye Golf G60--and deep front and rear bumpers. New alloy wheels are also on the parts list, and the cabin features motorsport-grade seats. Sketched teaser images show the car in a special silver metallic paint shade with vibrant yellow accents--including the distinctive grille trim, painted different colors on Volkswagen's different performance models.

Well - they already did one which was 650 hp and had max speed of 201 mph

I think the likelihood of this getting into production is about the same

This car would be amazing but I'm assuming a very large price tag.

Volkswagen Golf R400: Meet the hottest hatch
One-off concept provides blueprint for new 395bhp mega-hatch from Volkswagen's R division

This is the Volkswagen Golf R400, VW's spectacular new 395-hp version of the seventh-generation Golf. Unveiled at the Beijing motor show, the new über Golf has been developed by Volkswagen's R division in a program aimed at showcasing both its engineering prowess and range of customization.

The rapid new three-door hatchback, the latest in a long line of Golf concepts, is based around the mechanical package of the recently introduced VW Golf R in a move that sees it take direct aim at the likes of the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG, BMW M235i and sister company Audi's upcoming second-generation RS3.

The Golf R400 runs a powered-up version of the new Golf R's turbocharged 2.0-liter direct injection four-cylinder gasoline engine, the EA888 as it is known internally. Its engineering has been overseen by Volkswagen's head of gas engine development, Fritz Eichler -- the man behind the similarly configured unit used in the most powerful of the existing crop of mega-hatches, the A45 AMG.

With 395 hp at 7200 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque between 2,000 and 6,000 rpm, the heavily tuned four packs a significant 99 hp and 52 lb-ft more than the already-potent Golf R. By comparison, the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG offers 355 hp at 6,000 rpm and a similar 332 lb-ft between a slightly narrower 2,250-5,000 rpm.

The EA888 was also showcased in Audi's TT Quattro Sport Concept at the Geneva motor show back in March with an output of 414 hp and 332 lb-ft.

To maximize the sledgehammer performance potential of its engine, Volkswagen's latest concept employs a six-speed manual gearbox and the latest version of Volkswagen's Haldex multiplate clutch 4Motion four-wheel drive system, a combination that has also been taken from the new Golf R.

The electromechanical 4Motion four-wheel drive system constantly alters the amount of drive sent to the front and rear axles, with up to 100 percent of the torque able to be channeled to either end depending on prevailing levels of traction. It operates in combination with Volkswagen's EDS and XDS+ electronic differential locks as part of the Golf R400's multifunction ESP system, which also boasts a sport function to allow a less aggressive intervention of the electronic nannies when the driving conditions permit.

The Golf R400 is based around the three-door Golf R, with which it shares its hot-formed steel floorpan and elements of its bodyshell.

Despite early rumors suggesting it may receive a wider range a weight saving measures than those featured on the concept in Beijing, the R400 is not exceptionally light. But at 3.130 pounds, new Volkswagen undercuts the Golf R by 123 pounds and the A45 AMG by 298 pounds. This endows it with a weight-to-power ratio of 7.9 pounds per hp.

Volkswagen says the Golf R400 reaches 62 mph from standstill in a sizzling 3.9 seconds, 1.0 seconds faster than the German carmaker quotes for the Golf R and 0.7 second faster than Mercedes-Benz claims for the A45 AMG. Top speed is limited to 174 mph -- 19 mph over the electronically limited 155 mph maximum of the Golf R and A45 AMG, although officials suggest the gearing would allow it to crack 190 mph without electronic intervention.

The powerful new three-door hatchback's styling is a lot less restrained than recent concepts based on Volkswagen's perennial best seller, and they're in-line with plans to create a car that could be considered for low-volume production. Up front there is a deeper bumper sporting integral carbon fiber elements, including a prominent splitter. The cooling ducts have also been heavily modified to ram a greater amount of air into the engine bay and to the front brakes.

In a move that provides it with an even more aggressive stance than the new Golf R, the Golf R400 receives unique fenders that have been widened by 0.8 inches, giving the R400 an added 1.6 inches of body width front and rear.

Further back, there are carbon fiber exterior mirror housings and subtle sill extensions. The rear is distinguished by a carbon fiber wing spoiler atop the tailgate and a deeper bumper imbued with carbon fiber elements, vertical ducts used to extract hot air from the wheel houses, and a carbon fiber diffuser housing two large round tail pipes.

Yellow accents are used within the headlamp assemblies, which feature the latest LED graphics, as well as the grille and brake calipers to visually set the new car apart from the Golf R, which uses chrome highlights. The new Volkswagen also sports yellow and chrome R400 badges within the grille, along the flanks and on the tailgate.

As with its driveline, the chassis of the Golf R400 is borrowed largely from the Golf R. The two share the same MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension, which is set 0.8 inches lower than regular Golf models and features DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) that adapts the dampers to one of three modes: comfort, normal or sport. The 19-inch wheels and 235/35 R19 tires are also common between the Golf R and R400.

Inside, the Golf R400 once again builds on the Golf R with revised instruments (including a speedo incremented to 320 km/h or 199 mph) and carbon fiber-backed shell seats up front with a combination of carbon fiber trim elements and yellow stitching.

Wolfsburg officials are tight-lipped on the chances of the Golf R400 reaching showrooms. However, sources at its R division, which was responsible for its conception, development and engineering, suggest its close links to the Golf R could be an important factor in ensuring it sees production on a limited basis as a flagship for Volkswagen's performance car division.

Sad, but true. Not sure what the price point will come in at seeing as to how the normal Golf R goes between $33k-$36k, but if they could price this car at $40k, I think you would see the older portion of those driving the STI and EVO leaving to purchase this car.

While I see myself keeping my mkvi gti for another 2-3 years, I see my next vehicle being a Golf R. If this made it states side and came in at $40k, I would not hesitate to buy it... with an extended warranty.

Probably right. At that point I would have a hard time not opting for a cpo'd M or 135.

is that what it would really look like or does VW release badass concepts only to water down the final version like Subaru did/does?

it does look sweet.

I don't think it would be that high. $6k more than the R.

And yes I will buy one if offered here. Subaru doesn't offer it any more so I'd happily give VW my money for this. It will slay a STi.

Also, that color scheme reminds me of the 911 Turbo 918 Edition:

No, since they're so pricey and hard to find!/sarcasm

I've driven both the MkV/VI GTI and VI Golf R, in USDM as well as Euro spec. You? Funny how blanket statements work. It's also 'their' - not 'there' - since we're playing the judging game.

I'm sure closer to $60k. But what would be it's competitors? A $58k MB CLA45 AMG? The R 400 would be better in every way.

Until you compare the badges and realize you're paying similar prices for similar performance but one is a luxury brand and the other isn't quite that. It would be similar to if the GT-R cost the exact same as a 911 Turbo.

This thing looks oddly tame and fit/finish is very close to OEM GTi to be a "concept"...

Previous concepts were huge engineering exercises. This thing looks ready for production...
