Question 2012 Service Intervals

I'm coming up on 7500 miles in my 2012 Sport Premium. I see that Subaru has 7500 listed for the next service and I was just wondering if this just an oil change, or is there some other service that the dealer would do at this point?

If it's just the oil, I can, and will do that. Depending on what, and if, anything else needs to be done, I can probably do that myself too.

Have you got the warranty / maintenance booklet? Maintenance details - it's all in there. (It's the thinner book in the package that you should've gotten from the dealer.)

Alternately, I think it's also on the Subaru website.

Short answer: oil and filter change, inspections, lubrication. Fluids and tire rotation if necessary.

EDIT: only exception would be if you've got warranty work that you want to have the dealer perform or look into. For example, the squeaky seat issue, or if you've got the e-mail (letter) regarding the engine control module.

Ok. I figured it was just the basics. I'm considering buying a 3 day pass to the STIS website and downloading all of the manuals. It's only 35 bucks and I always like to have the factory shop manuals for any vehicle I've had, and there is also a section that covers all of the service intervals and procedures to be performed.

For those who haven't seen it, here it is.

I'd suggest checking the air filter every 7500 even though factory trained dealers do not. My filters are plugged up and gross by 5000 miles.
Also, I'm fairly certain that the tires get rotated at the dealers 7500 service.
As a new owner, I will suggest checking the dipstick, tires, and coolant every fillup or so.
Changin the fluids and doing basic maintenance work is something you can and should do yourself. Trust me when i say no one will do as good a job as you.
Good luck and enjoy! I'm gonna go clean mime and give it a little love.
Happy new year all!

you can get the digital version of our manuals which should include maintenance schedule off the subuaru website...i use that a lot for bulb info etc when i dont have the hard copy of the manual with me.

the ebay manual is just as good and since its sooooo long just ctrl F if you are looking for something specific, thats how I go through that book.

Just be aware that you MUST use Adobe Reader to view the ebay manual.

I always tried to keep Adobe software off of my PC, so I was using Foxit.

If you try to open the manual with a PDF reader other than Adobe's, you will get an error, or a prompt for a password.

Whats the consensus on the coolant levels? Ive heard (and confirmed with my car) that coolant is usually low, especially with a cold car. Is it ok to add coolant to the overflow tank if its not the oem subaru brand one? Or it is not necessary? When car is warm the coolant level is in mid range.

My car is mid-range when cold, and right on the full line when hot.

I don't know how specific/unique the Subaru coolant is. I know that VW coolant is very unique/specific, and mixing it with "common" coolants that you can buy at Autozone/Walmart/whatever ruins all of the coolant in the car. So I'd do some research before blending non-Subaru coolants, and report back what you find to this forum.

Subaru are very clear about not adding anything other than their oem coolant. They say you CAN use other stuff but it "decreases the life of the coolant".

Subaru blue coolant is specific to Subaru's. Luckily, I bought some two years ago for my Legacy to top her off. At $35 a gallon it's a little pricey at the dealership, but then again, so is a new motor!

You said "When car is warm the coolant level is in mid range." So bring it to the dealership and tell them to add coolant until the level is at the full line. They should be happy to do that for you.

Well this is kind of good news. After googling coolant stuff, it sent me back to nasioc (surprise surprise) right to unabombers stickies. and according to him:

What about topping off my system? Don't sweat it. Just add water and be done with it as the minor amount of water you add isn't enough to dilute your overall coolant capacity enough to change much. If you are super worried anyway, you could top it off with pre-mixed coolant, but that's a little on the "it puts the lotion in the basket" side. And if you think you need to add .1 ounces of Subaru Cooling System Conditioner when you top off...you might want to get a new tin foil hat.

My dealer has basic oil change for $69.99 and $129.95 for 7,500 mile interval maintenance.
My car is at 7k now. When I went in they insisted that if I don't do the 7,500 mile interval maintenance for $129.95, they can void my warranty.
I look at what's offered for the 7,500 service it looks like just a lot of extra 'inspections' compared to basic oil change.
Can they really void my warranty for choosing basic oil change?
Especially if the manual doesn't specifically call out for these inspections.
