Default 98 to 2000 2.5 to highly moddified STI conversion possible?

I was thinking. Why buy an STI if, when, it comes out when I might be able to save some money building one myself. I like the look of the older imprezas better anyway. But the way I see it, I'll be replacing the turbo, intercooler, and much of the engine / suspension anyway. I can do the labor myself as my father is a mechanic and has every tool known to man. Wouldn it be cheaper to just buy an older good Impreza in good shape and drop a built 2.2 or 2.0 engine in it with all the forged internals and all for 400hp as a target and bullet proof reliability? I mean why buy a nearly built car and pay even more to get to 400HP and all when I could buy a cheaper car and just go most of the work myself? Anyone have any help / ideas for me?? Thanks all./

If you have the time, patience, know how, and money to do it yourself, by all means go for it. Most people prefer the added reliability and warrantee of a factory built car.

Some of the fastest street GC8 Imprezas have the EJ25 dropped in it anyway (Jun Impreza, 550 HP). Keep the EJ25 and build that. I would much rather have the higher compression instead of this dreaded turbo lag, and you'll save lot's of $$$ and time.

Depends on who does the set up. I love NA engines and no feeling like it really. Also hachiroku are famous for NA power that has a good balance and gives us joy right Dori x2. I own a hachi as well and plates sez DORI KIN check it out on overboost.com.

It's certainly possible and I'm sure it would be much cheaper to build a 400hp RS than to buy a brand new STi. There is alot more to the STi than just the engine though. The suspension/brakes/transmission help make it a tremendously well rounded sportscar, just like the EVO7. The transmission in this case is a big one. 400HP on a 2.5 block and you are probably looking at enough torque to warrant a new transmission. There are already cars running 400+ ft/lb (with modified/turbo'd 2.5 engines) on the STi six-speed with no problems.

Default My idea

Well here's the main goal. An AWD turbo 2.0 car with 400hp, reliability, can be a daily grind-mobile, but can handle the track and the dirt road with ease. I'm just thinking I could save cash by building a 2.5 RS to these levels instead of buying an STI and raising it the little it needs to make my goal. I mean if I'm going to have to replace a suspension shouldn't I replace one that's cheaper in the first place? I dunno. This is just an idea. I mean I could afford an STI but I want a Supra TT as well. So I'm looking to save some cash somewhere.
