Hard Start - Fuel Pump Issues?
So I have been having issues starting my car at different points in the day. The first video is in the morning. Normally car sits 12 or so hours before I drive it in the morning. It starts up fine as you can see from video and the rpms and boost are normal. You can hear the fuel pump whining when I turn the key.
This is after work. I parked the car at 8 and leave work at 5. It sat for exactly 9 hours. Usually starts after 15 seconds. Boost is higher than normal and car shakes. Fuel pump sounds normal as well. This is at idle. Idles perfectly. I have tried every trick in the book. Turn it on to prime the pump three times for ten seconds. No go. The only times it starts right away are in the morning after sitting 10+ hours, and within 5 minutes of turning off. So when getting gas or running in some where real quick. Any time else between 10 minutes to 10 hours, it starts hard. List of fuel related mods: Perrin fuel rails, Walbro 255 pump, and 650 cc injectors. And yes, it is tuned for all of this. Fuse is fine and holds charge. My tuner says the problem is the cradle holding the fuel pump. Since its a Walbro it had to be modified and the previous owner used zip ties. I am looking for others with this problem. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Last edited by STiSam52; 11-08-2011 at 10:47 PM. Have you checked your fuel filter and your fuel pressure regulator?

It could very well be a leak in the fuel pump assembly. On the 08+ you have to modify the housing and use new o-rings in order to get everything to seal up properly. If you don't do it right, you could end up with a car that seems to work OK, but will eventually end up having slow startup issues and even can go lean at high RPM's and WOT.
I had the same issue as you when I originally installed my fuel pump, and it went away after using two o-rings that were slightly thicker. A few months later the issue came back and I also noticed it was going lean at higher RPM's, so I pulled it back out and the pump was loose again, and I ended up having to grind off a little more plastic to get it to seat properly. I would start by checking the pump and housing assembly. If you have a wideband I would also monitor AFR's. If you don't have a wideband, I would suggest avoiding going WOT until you get the issue resolved. I dont want to have to buy a new assembly because they range from $200-300. Also spent money rebuilding alternator clutches. So don't want to burn it out again |

Also, some people will try to tell you it is normal for this to happen on the newer cars after a fuel pump install. That is absolutely NOT true. The car should start up exactly like it did from the factory. Now that I have had my pump issues sorted out for 8+ months I haven't had any issues. The car starts up instantly.

Well unfortunately we smoked the Evap system last night and there are no vacuum leaks anywhere. Plan B take the fuel pump assembly back out and replace the hose and check everything out again!

same issue...kind of
I replaced my fuel pump a week ago and silly me...forgot to use vaseline on the o-rings when reassembling. On the GR pump housing it is paramount to use lubricant and correct sized o-rings. I even pulled the pump to verify and sure enough one of the o-rings is slightly deformed. I'll post up once I address the issue.
