Default Autocross season is almost here - if you need driving shoes...

... you can go for true driving shoes like Simpson, Sparco, or Omp. Ggood luck finding them and even better luck getting the right size, especially through mail order. Alternatives include cheap tennis shoes with thin soles ot wrestling shoes. The idea is to get something that will allow you to feel the pedals better for more effective heel and toe shifting.

I picked up a pair of Adidas wrestling shoes today at Sports Authority for $45. I checked online later and found that they have the same shoes from Foot Locker for $30 + shipping. I had to go a full size larger than I would normally so I highly suggest trying them on first.

Note: If you decide to do wheel-to-wheel racing later, you will need shoes made with Nomex, which wrestling shoes don't have. So keep in mind that you will have to toss the shoes if you step up to the next level.

I have been thinking about this same subject for the past week. When driving, I've been trying to heel-toe with my fat lug sole shoes to prepare myself for the track.

I'm not on the level to go out and buy anything special. Doesn't your wife wear Keds? I might try those. They sell knock-offs at payless for under $20.

But I do not think Keds would be all that comfortable!

Since I have an automatic, I have been practicing my left foot braking ever sicne I have gotten the car. It is almost second nature to me now, trying to control slides with my brake AND my gas! But that doesn't mean I can aply it in autocross as of yet...

I hope I can save enough money to go auto crossing as I am taking 2 trips this year and I am still trying to pay off the CC's so we shall see what happens...

Maybe if I move back in with the parents...

NAH!

Both my wife and I wore Keds lookalikes for the past 2 years. They were $8 a pair at Wal-Mart!!! The soles were so thin that you could actually feel the edge of the brake and accelerator pedals quite well; great for driving, bad for working corners. The only problem with them was that they looked a bit feminine for me to wear.

Where's Payless?

I guess we don't have Payless. I went to Wal-Mart and all they had was pink ones. Don't laugh when I show up ready to race. You won't be laughing when you get smoked by the guy with the pink shoes.

Jake uses both feet. Seems to work for him.

Whatever works, right

I have been using left foot braking (LFB) for about 3 years and the only time that it really seems to be of benefit for my driving style is long sweeping turns where the speed is above 20 MPH. In the Miata I use LFB to keep the front planted and kick the back around just a bit with the application of plenty of gas at the same time; great on skidpads and wide 180s.

I haven't used LFB on the Subaru much yet, but tried it several times this winter on my way home. I noticed that the brake pedal was much touchier than on the Miata with the sweet spot in low traction conditions somewhere between "just looking at the pedal" to barely resting my foot on the pedal. More presure than that and the front end starts to wash out into understeer. I was much more successful using throttle off oversteer and balancing it with gas once the car was pitched into the turn appropriately.

Rawcode,

You can afford to do the auto-x's, they are only like $25.00, and that is a bargain for a day of fun with your car. Just skip dinner and movie and you will be good to go.

I for one cannot wait to see Winslow in the pink keds, I would say be sure and get some pretty bows, but they might get caught on one of the oedals!

Just paint STI on the side of the shoes and you'll be all set.

I've got a pair of Puma Frankenclyde's. They look sort of like skate shoes, but aren't as bulky or thick soled. Work nice for driving, but I just got them to wear whenever. An added bonus is Puma makes race shoes in conjunction with Sparco. So if I ever get seriously into racing, I can get a set of those Sparco Puma Racecats to match.

Heal toe is used for downshifting while braking in a turn.

You basically apply brake with the "toe" of your right foot. While you're doing that depress the clutch with your left foot and use the "heel" of your right foot to blip the gas to match the RPM's the gear you are going to is spinning at. Once matched, release the clutch for a smooth engagement. This is done because at the limit in a turn, any slight shock(an abrupt drivetrain engagement) could break the tires loose.

Also, I said "heel" and "toe" because it generally ends up being that ball just under your big toe, and somewhere along the right side of your foot(depends on pedal spacing) that actually makes contact with the pedals.

Thumbs up

This would be a pretty good group buy. I vote for the Sti pink myself but how about some socks instead with the little rubber grippy things on the bottom.

Some people compare this technique to double-clutching, so they can rev-match. It helps when downshifting into the corners.

I think I can work a GB with WalMart on some STi Pink socks

I think that I would be suspicious of genuine STI pink socks coming from someplace like Wal-Mart.

While you're at it, can you check on a genuine pink STI 1-piece for me? It can be downright cold at the early events of the year.

Ok, I admit it. They were the pink keds, socks and black marker. Couldn't find the one piece. I think the salesperson said they were out of stock. Some weird mad rush due to an upcoming AutoX.

The SCCA has a Solo II (Autocross) season in Alaska that usually includes several championship events with winners announced at the end of the season based on points earned from each event entered. The Porsche Club of America, Alaska Region, also has an autox season.

I will post SCCA information here when we have something to pass along. Right now we are expecting to have a Test & Tune in late April somewhere in the Anchorage area. I expect to have something before the end of next week.

Right now we are looking at a championship season from May through early September with approximately 8 points events. This is dependant on member volunteers stepping up and help coordinate some of the events.

More to follow. . .

Isn't there a Payless in the Dimond mall?

Personally, I like to drive in golf shoes!

That's right down by O'Brady's. Too late, I already bought the Ked knock-offs at Walmart. The pink at Wal-Mart was a better STi pink.

I had to drive a Miata once in snow boots, now that was fun!

I was hitting two pedals at once, and not on purpose.

Made for a fun little trip, but I made it.
