DEI's reflect a gold foil.

www.designengineering.com

Refer to infrared testing volume 2 for product and testing information.

Yes I did use it on the bottom side of the heatshield.

I know this is not the time of year that most people think of heat control under your hoods, but dont forget about it guys. There is never a bad time to address this under your hoods! I still have some blankets available as well for you guys that havent got the chance to tackle your heat soak!!!

Hey HeroCrank. first off, thanks for the threads, they make great reading material. I have to ask though how confident are you about the actual temperatures that you are pulling off that camera?

We use a Flir at work as well and when I talked on the phone with them regarding calibration they said it isn't necessary because their camera is not meant for accurate temperature measurement only differential measurements of instantaneous conditions.

When I compared the temp readings against a Fluke IR thermometer and a Honeywell thermostat the Flir was reading about 4-5 degrees above the actual conditions.

That said the delta T should be accurate in your calculations which is the most valuable data. Have you taken multiple captures of the same area over the course of, say, 10 seconds to see if the values are repeatable?

Sorry for nerding out on you there...

I received my lava blanket last night and will be installing it this weekend. When applying the wire ties, do you run the ties under and just forward (turbo side) of the neck of the downpipe and the junction point between the exhaust and intake turbines?

When I do actual product tests I complete 3 tests with the same conditions everytime. The data that I present to others is the best average between all tests. But that being said, there has not been any significant variance in numbers that would even exceed .5 degrees. I do not use multiple pieces of equipment though, I only use the flir camera for my testing.

When I take special request images I get the best image quality and take between 2-5 different images only in one sitting though.

So in short, I am very confident in any of the results that I have submitted. I have also been keeping track of all of the numbers in new tests that I have already submitted in previous tests to ensure accuracy.

If you go to www.ptpturboblankets.com there will be a step by step installation guide that I created in the installation section that will show you exactly how to install your new blanket.

Very cool, it's nice to see someone putting the time in to do this right. Thanks again for the threads. A lava blanket or a home made wrap is on my short list.

I've been noticing a lot of new 2011-2013 owners posting recently about first mods or mod advice. Summer is going to be here before you know it and engine bay heat control should be on your minds too. Research all the infrared threads to make your own decisions or answer any questions that you may have. Don't be afraid to PM me for any questions or help that you may need.

^ I'm using the same, minus the gold bling. Definitely makes a difference.

P.S. Hero, you're the reason I started wrapping my st00fs. Love the pics you've been taking

Have a few road trips coming up and made my order over the weekend. Fits my list of being cheap, effective and safe. I see also a mention of decreased spool time- how big are we all noticing?

Edit - talking rpm comparison on average for full spool

Its faster spool time and throttle response. You will notice a difference after you install it. Great choice mod wise

Thank you, I must have misinterpreted originally - that makes more sense. Not like it would enable full boost sooner, but faster.

Maybe this was answered already but what are the long term effects on the turbo from using this? You are holding heat in, which I would assume will cause the turbo to run hotter?

Unabomber is going to jump you... good sources claim 1st hand zero long term issues with multiple turbos.

The only negative effects from a turbo blanket are the same as with any heat wrap... in the very low chance you have an oil leak that gets absorbed by the blanket, you can end up with a nice little fireball.
