Future Products—Mazda
No hot hatch for U.S. MicroSport: This hot hatchback version of the European-market Mazda2 subcompact was on a short list for America. It was killed because it would be too expensive to equip it at a level Americans would want. Kabura: This entry-level 2+2 coupe is patterned after the concept car from the 2006 Detroit show. It borrows significant components from the rear-wheel-drive MX-5 Miata. The soonest it would arrive at U.S. dealerships would be the 2009 model year, if it comes here. Mazda3: A reskin is expected for the 2007 model year; a redesign comes for the 2009 model year. In the meantime, the Mazdaspeed3 will arrive this fall, powered by a 250-hp version of the Mazdaspeed6's turbo four-cylinder engine. A limited-slip differential will mitigate wheel spin and torque steer from this front-wheel-drive pocket rocket. Mazda6: A redesign comes in spring. It will share components with the Ford Fusion, which itself is a massaged version of the original Mazda6. The new Mazda6 will be considerably longer, much of the extra length going into second-row seating. It still will be smaller than foes such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. The V-6 gets bumped up to 3.5 liters. MX-5 Miata: A retractable-hardtop version comes in the 2007 model year. RX-8: A two-seat coupe was evaluated but deemed too expensive to develop for the incremental volume it would produce. A redesign comes in early 2009 as a 2010 model. Mazda5: The compact minivan was launched in mid-2005. No major changes are foreseen. MPV: The minivan dies after the 2006 model year. Tribute/CX-5: The crossover ends its current run after the 2006 model year. The Tribute will return in spring 2007, renamed the 2008 CX-5. It will be developed on a re-engineered version of the platform that the Tribute shares with the Ford Escape and the Mercury Mariner. CX-7: Mazda's MPV, Mazda5 and Mazda6 all contribute to the underpinnings of the 2007 CX-7, a five-passenger crossover. The CX-7 is powered by a 244-hp version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Mazdaspeed6. CX-9: The 2006 MPV will be Mazda's last minivan, so Mazda needs a people hauler. The 2008 CX-9 has three rows of seats and will be the biggest Mazda ever. Ford's 3.5-liter V-6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission will be offered. Sales begin in early 2007. B series: No matter how much Texas dealers want a pickup, Mazda is having a hard time making the franchise believe the B series has zoom-zoom. If Ford gets around to redesigning the Ranger, Mazda likely will not get a version.
