Question 12 VDC impact wrenches - any good?

I'm thinking of buying one for changing from summer tires to snows and back. I don't have an air compressor, so I thought this would be the way to go. I might also use it to change over from street ot auto-x rubber. Any opinions?

I was thinking about this as well (though I'm thinking about air tools now too), but I saw one on Harbor Freight's site for like $35-40 just last week. Sounds interesting, but not sure it has the torque. Anyone?

I've seen quite a few guys using em at autoxes. Still would be best to tighten with a torque wrench anyway, so it doesn't need to provide so much torque.

It should be able to do wheels, not sure about suspension bits.

Cool

So far the only one I've seen is from JC Whitney:

REVERSIBLE 1/2"DRIVE 12-VOLT IMPACT WRENCH KIT
Delivers up to 250 ft.-lbs. of torque, yet is so much easier to use than a lug wrench
Built-in light for night use
Perfect for road emergencies…simply plugs into cigarette lighter receptacle or clamps directly to 12-volt battery
Tool loosens/tightens each lug nut in seconds. Also great for shop jobs—rotating tires, inspecting brakes, removing bolts, etc. Unique torquing action allows 12-volt impact wrench to generate the torque and power of an air-powered wrench! Motor spins until it reaches maximum speed, then internal clutch automatically engages and nut is tightened/loosened. Industrial-grade plastic housing. Easy-grip handle with trigger switch. Weighs less than 5 lbs. Kit includes 13-ft. power cord with lighter plug, battery adapter with alligator clips, sockets to fit all sizes of lug nuts, gloves, molded plastic carrying case and instructions.

12-volt Impact Wrench Kit WAS $64.99 Kit 49.99

Problem is shipping gonna be another 15 bucks or so, so I'd like to find one at a local store. AutoZone didn't have any - maybe WalMart or NAPA

The cheap ones (that run off your cigarette lighter) suck. I got one from Brookstone for $50-60. It's like an impact wrench with about 1 sec between each feeble impact. Unusable.

However, if you're serious, spend [edit: make that $180] on one from Makita that uses a NiMH battery. All the WRC teams use them, so they must work pretty well.

Wow, that Makita looks pretty sweet compared to the cigarette lighter models. I'll have to see about getting one...

I just brough one in Canadian Tire (I'm Canadian) last month, it is a wall plug impact gun, it works fine and it use as the same as Snap-on design. (1/2" Impact Wrench, AC/DC 7.5 amps, max. torque 240 lb.ft.)
It cost about $130 cad.
After you buy the gun, all you needs is get yourself a set of Deep impact sockets!!
