Default Rebuilding 5 SP WRX transmission Help On using 2nd gear

Im rebuilding a 2002 WRX 5 -Sp transmission

This is Early 02 5-sp so it had 1 and 2 gear thinner than late 03 and up WRX

QUESTION is My trans has Bad 2 gears
Can I order a upgraded Thicker 2 gear (it comes with main input shaft) and thicker 2Nd gear that goes on the output shaft and assembly it together and it will work Proper wit the other gears????

You haven't opened this trans up yet, have you?

Will it work? maybe. Will you be reshimming until it's right? ABSOLUTELY.....

I suggest the LGT gearset swap thread.

I just ordered the right gears and returned the other ones.

Short answer is no. Remember that there are two parts to 1st and 2nd gear. Both driven gears are sold separately , but the drive part of each are integrated to the main shaft. So if you want to change 2nd gear to the later spec, at a minimum, you will need the main shaft as well, and 1st gear to go along with it.

Then there is the issue that you have now put in thicker gears, so you actually end up having to replace a lot of other parts in the case to get the shafts to stack up correctly.

Can it be done? Yes, but it is pretty involved. And at that point, as said above, you may as well just put in the LGT gears, as you will be replacing most all of those parts any way. Then you get better gear ratios, and stronger gears as well.

Just keep in mind that you will have to replace 3 - 4 with the LGT gears when doing the swap. You can put in just 1st and 2nd LGT gears into a WRX transmission, but it is actually even more difficult that what you were initially proposing, and you will have a less than ideal shift from 2nd to 3rd.

I can attest to the dramatic ratio change from LGT 2nd gear to WRX 3rd gear. Also the dumb amount of work to make that combination work! :/

To the OP: Just contact Flat Irons directly. They will set you up with what you want!
