Default Do airbags go off if your hand is on the horn?

During a collision?

They did a test on Mythbusters about hand placement on the steering wheel when the airbag goes off and one of the tests broke a 'thumb'. And yes, they will go of no matter where your hands are.

Yes, and you will spend the better part of a week trying to get your finger out of your nose.

As a professional rescuer I have seen dozens of vehicle accidents. 99% of the time the airbag does some kind of damage to the vehicles contents.

The worst accident is when the airbag breaks both arms just above the elbow.

I've been in 3 fairly serious accidents, but have never had the Airbags go off. They're designed to go off when they're needed to save a life, so if they go off and you break an arm you should be counting your blessings that you're still alive because they only go off in life threatening situations.

I design airbag systems for a living. Keep away from them and pray you never need to use them.

I cringe when I see people driving around with their legs up on the dash above the passenger airbag. Yikes.

I think the same thing about people who keep their dogs on their lap when driving. It can't be easy extracting the pieces of Fifi that have been smashed into your face / chest...

As someone who participates in live fire crash tests, I agree with this post.

Funny you mention that... It is one of those things you try and forget. I have seen this exact situation, it landed the passenger on a backboard with one leg strapped under his chin. Among other injuries, his femur was shattered. The way he had been folded, his leg being 180 degrees from normal, was actually pinching off the femoral artery saving his life. Buttcheeks on the ecu. We didn't dare move that leg...

We totaled our 2011 CRV last spring. Front end impact into a Trans Am that had turned left into our lane. We got out of the car dazed, made sure the others were okay, and I reentered the car for insurance papers before even realizing the airbags had deployed. I was like "huh, how about that." Can't remember where my hands were at on the wheel, but I can safely say my leg wasn't on the dash

Thanks for all this air bag talk, I'll remember to keep the pooch in the back seat now, don't want to see her ejected out the rear window in case of a crash.

I was in one bad accident and my head must have been turned cause the airbag it the side if my face, my jaw was swollen for like a week-_- It would suck to have your hand on that when it goes off

Best place is in the passenger footwell, or in the seat with a harness realistically. Back seat is pretty bad 'cause they'll go flying. Hatch area is the worst because crumple zones.

UGHH! My girlfriend always has her feet up on my dash, I always ask her to sit properly and get your feet off the dash (I don't know why she has them up there anyways in my new car... No respect...) shell become a freakin pretzel if something were to happen, I would never want to see what happens to someone during that situation. I can't imagine.

Just imagine your knees hitting your face at 100mph. It would be like Randy Johnson pegging two softballs at your dome piece. OUCH.

The one time I was hit with an airbag it got me on the bottom of both forearms, left a nasty rash but I don't see how it could break arms. Unless you were driving with your arms sticking through the steering wheel

Ever see how close old ladies sit to the wheel? I could see how it would just blow their arms out of their sockets

I'm waiting for the first motorbike jackets/pants with embedded airbags (or bouncebags?)...
