I hit a concrete wall at like 50mph with my front corner of my RS dead stop crushed the whole fender cracked my control arms and split my engine crossmember down the middle smashed my face into the window...and yet no air bags went off and they worked. (Have an srs airbag scanner) wear your seat belt cause you never know.

^^^ air bags are designed to go hand in hand with your seat belt. with out the seat belt it will do much more harm than good. theres also probably an explanation for why your bags didn't go off. i spent 4 years learning/working in the collision repair field. the chapters about air bags said how sensitive the sensors are and how only certain impact angles/force will set them off. if they dont go off its usually because what ever the angle of impact you suffered was no in the "sweet spot" of what the engineers deemed was safe for it to go off. again in the wrong situations it will do much more harm then good

These saved my neck from being likely broken from the rotational impact recently when I totaled my Fit. Side of my face burnt a little the rest of the day, kind of like a sunburn, but nothing more than that. Was extremely lucky. |

What always makes me go hmmm on Nasioc....
OP - wrecked my Suby. My airbags didn't go. Pissed. Seeing a lawyer tomorrow. WiseNasiocRegulars-: were you hurt? OP - no, but they should have gone off! WiseNasiocRegulars- well if they did, you woulda been - they aren't the puffy marshmallow things you see on commercials. OP - well, I'm still seeing a lawyer...or calling Subaru! I'm owed man!! Sorry to digress---mods, no insult if deleted! |

Air bags will propel anything in front of you now at different speeds. It depends on if your car is equipped with the stage bags now. It is a SRS system which means it works with a seat belt. I have seen a bunch of wrecks where the person slides between the bags and gets stopped by the windshield.
The ones where they put their feet up on the dash. Some of the older air bags use the windshield as a deflection point for the airbag. I've seen what happens when people do that too. If you have your hand on the horn and the bag goes off you may be picking your nose like jacques cousteau going to the deepest depths. |

There needs to be a little lateral airbag that blows your hand(s) away from the steering wheel so the main bag can deploy safely. Lol

So I wear glasses when I drive. I'm assuming it wouldn't be good, but what would happen if the airbag went off?

So close up that myself and my dad make fun of her for it. In all seriousness, though, airbag experts - is sitting too closely dangerous? Is this something we should try to get her to correct? I imagine it would be hard for her to do after years of driving that way... but if there's a solid argument about why she should, then we may just have to force her to change her ways. |

I remember that Mythbusters episode where they tested: if you drive with your thumbs sticking out onto the middle of the steering wheel and get in an accident, will it break your thumbs? It was confirmed IIRC (eek)

There is no sensor in the fender. There is an accelerometer under the center console that measures acceleration vectors (direction and magnitude) and determines whether or not the airbags should go off. Modern systems do not have switches or sensors or whatever placed around the car. Just the occupancy sensors and acceleration sensor in the cabin. |

There are sensors in front of the car. There are also sensors in the B-pillar too. The computer is in the center of the vehicle usually under the center console. When two of the three sensors working in conjunction with each other sense a collision the computer will determine if the air bags need to go off. The sensors in the seats now are for the stage type air bags. It determines your weight and then adjusts the bag to go off in certain stages. So a little old lady doesn't get the same punch in the face as the 300 pound bodybuilder. They also are used to turn that certain airbag on or off. There are 10 airbags on the new Lexus ES just to give you a idea of how many there are in a car now.

Damonchoy- I've read (maybe nhtsa website?) that you should sit far enough back that you are able to bend your wrist over the top of the steering wheel. Maybe check there to show Momma?

Modern subarus have a minimum of at least 4 sensors. Two up front, and two in the pillars... |
