Default hmmm...smoke/steam coming out of radiator...help?

ok this is really weird. i have a 98 2.5 rs, and there is alot of smoke/steam coming out of the radiator when i stop. it seems to do it more when its wet or snowing out, but it's not normal because there is ALOT of it. i have brand new HG's, not overheating, not losing coolant, just had the radiator pressure tested and its fine, i have and injen CAI but there is a waterproof pre-filter on it for the winter. nothing is wrong with the car at all it run perfect, but when i stop it does this. anyone have any ideas or more questions, i'd love the help

also, i have the knocking noise that is semi normal on cold engine, but could my timing belt tensioner be bad? and does that have anything to do with the smoke? i have no idea....the knocking seems to go away mostly after warming up, but it miught not go away completely, not sure

on my 98 it would also do that, on mine it was the front main seal leaking. Does it smell like coolant?

Does it smell like coolant, are you ever seeing any fluid of anykind underneath, how is the level of your other fluids? Check all of those before it may become too late depending on the problem :-\

You have a leak.

Was the system pressure tested when it was warm? I know there is pressure in the system when it is hot so you have to be careful opening it up, but seals expand when hot/warm and they dynamics change. Try testing when the system is warm. I have seen a pin hole leak in a water pump spray an almost invisible stream of coolant onto the radiator and smoke. When the system was cold it wouldn't get a drip at the seal when pressured for 30 minutes+. Not even enough to register as loosing coolant but it was. Just a thought.

Peace,

Greg

I believe you can also pressure test the system with the engine running....this would make it slightly safer....as you don't have to remove a hot cap. Just be careful to relieve the pressure test pressure before you remove it off the radiator neck.

Hopefully you figure out something soon. As long as you keep an eye on your coolant level, and other fluid levels....it shouldn't be bad. Don't let it get too low, as you will roast your motor if the coolant is gone!
