Default Upgrade Foglights to 2010-2012 Outback Assembly

Ok, we all know that the OEM or stock foglights have a terrible. This is because of Subaru wanting to cut cost. The stock housing is made from plastic with a plastic lens, and the bulb is a PSX24W which is a mere 24 watt bulb. The 2010-2012 Outback shares a very similar design foglight assembly. It is mounted the same way as our foglights. The difference between the two is that the Outback has a glass lens and a metal reflector, it also uses a H11 bulb that is 55 watts. I got the idea from here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20788

The assembly can be purchased here: http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_...p?partid=19073
(February 22,2013: out of stock) cheapest place i saw.

In order to install these lights, you will need a H11 female connector. You can either splice the OEM wiring, or you can buy a male PSX24W male connector an make a plug and play kit (what i will be doing). You can purchase the stuff here. http://autolumination.com/connectors.htm
this is the pig tail for the H11.

To make a Wire harness you need this.

or you could use this one, but a couple of tabs needs to be shaved first.

I should be getting the pig tails tomorrow.(February 23, 2013).

Update: February 24, 2012
ok well, I got everything today. I have my harness ready. I just need to install. Sorry, I have mentioned it before, but I cannot do a before and after pics because I currently have cree led lights. I will eventually put up a comparison picture. Or you could just go out and turn on your own fog lights.

So I have done some digging and calculations. It turns out that 12 volts going through a wire to power 55 watts will produce 4.58 amps * 2(because two lights, duh). Which is 9.16, which is safely below the 15 amp fuse limit. There has been some concern about the ability of the OEM wires to handel the new lights and the amps demand on them. Well not to worry. The stock wires are 16 or 18 gauge wires. Looking at a chart/table the "Maximum amps for chassis wiring" for both of these wires are well below those numbers.

The DIY: Use this as a reference. http://techinfo.subaru.com/proxy/661...FogLampKit.pdf

There are three Clips on the bottom of each fog light. You have to stick a flat head between the head of the clip and the body of the clip, clip and the car. Then twist and pull it out. There are one on the side and two towards the front.

Then you need to remove one bolt. Yes, one bolt is all that is securely holding the foglight in place.

Here is a comparison picture between the stock and the outback.

This is how the old fog light is mounted in the car. I removed the cover just to show you the comparison of how it looks mounted. You don't have to remove the cover, but it could make it easy. Just push from behind.

This is the new one.

I will get a picture with them on later tonight. and a comparison picture some time next week or just go look at your own. LOL

UPDATE!

Comparison pictures. These were at my parking garage incline. I did one facing towards the incline and one down the incline.
Facing up incline Headlights only:

Facing up incline, head lights and fog lights.

facing down the incline head lights only:

Facing down the incline, head lights and fog lights:

Both of yours model share the same foglight assembly. Unfortunately, it is mounted differently from the 2012-2013 2.0 Impreza and the 2010-2013 Outback. The stock lighting from the 2012-2013 Impreza is a small 24 watt bulb. You two have a 51 watt bulb in your light. Twice the output of my stock light.

I went down this route because I got tired of waiting for a good looking light bar for our cars to be released. I have been in communications with John from Rally innovations. Although they are not the best, they have responded to my emails. I have seen their design, although i did agree not to share pictures of it. But, I thought to myself. I wanted to improve the forward lighting, how much am I willing to invest in this project. I debated about getting a light bar and some Hella 500 series foglights. How much would have that run me? Sure, I know it would have been probably a lot brighter, but do I need all that light?

I am personally fed up with the lack of light coming from my fog lamps. Why even put them on our cars if they don't shine on anything. The other question I had is why the fog lamps shut off when the high beams are on. I am trying to see if I can have the fogs on for highs and lows.

I cannot answer the first question. Your light output is a lot more than what mine used to be. Your car came with double the wattage.

Your next question, has to do with driving laws. The law states that on public driving roads, you can only have 4 operating lights. For example, one of my family members has a Landrover Discovery, that beast came with 8 monster lights. high and low beams, bright foglights (bright as my low beams) and what appeared to be 8-10 inch driving beams. If she turned all of them on at once(which she could because that thing was not meant for "normal" driving) anyone would go blind!!! But, if you want to pursue to quest for independent foglight then I found this to be the easiest route: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...2404593&page=2

Yes. Highbeams should never be used for normal traffic, following or oncoming. My lows are plenty bright. Bad weather driving is also never a good place for highs. I wanted a foglamp capable of a longer, possibly wider beam. I can barely tell mine are on with the lows :/

stock wise, there isn't much to offer. Your options are either retrofitting HID projectors in the housing or get a lightbar and attach some off-road lights.

If you notice, I edited my original post because I ended up buying a pair off of ebay instead. Didn't feel like waiting a month and I got them for about the same price.

subscribed. will be doing this as well as the independant fog lights I think. I don't care if they are on with the highbeams (i would never use that anyway because I only use the fogs in weather that requires their usage) but I do want to be able to turn on Parking lights and fogs for the real nasty weather.

Well, I wanted them to be water proof. so I used a hot glue gun and a torch. Not the best ways to skin the cat. But I ran out of heat shrink and I absolutely did not want to run butt connectors. But that is just me. You could use silicone or whatever.

I use small wire nuts and silicone seal around the opening. Works well.

i plan to just order the plastic part of the H11 clip and the female pins for inside of it. I will use the leads off the other connector and just solder to the pins and plug them in. much cleaner overall.

I mean thats fine too. There is 1000 ways to skin a cat. I dont have a pic with the cover installed. But it looks the same as stock. The lights are the same size and mounts the same. There are little tabs on the side of the outback lights. They fit right into slotsnin the bumper. The stock housing doesnt have these tabs. It is almost as if subaru planned on using the ouback housing but then decided to go with a cheaper housing at the last minute.

ok, it looks like the reflector of the outback light is smaller than the glass? maybe it is just a reflection, hard to tell from the picture

It is not. Just an optical thing. The reflector is placed farther back into the housing so it looks smaller. It has the same diamter. But it does how ever look like the reflector has a smaller surface area than the stock one.
