How to convince parents to get 5Spd on WRX
So I'm set on purchasing a WRX. However, we are still deciding either to get a 4EAT or 5 Spd. *puts on flame suit just in case*
My dad will not let me get a 5 Spd, simply because my mom does not know to drive it. She drove a clutch before back in the 70's and ended up burning the clutch (it was even her friend's car). My dad knows how to drive it (of course since he's a mechanic). I know how to drive one pretty well (not enough to get full potential). And I've heard a 4EAT pretty much takes out all the fun of owning a WRX? Is this correct? Thx for suggestions

Simple. Tell them the manual gets better gas mileage.

If you're paying for the car and paying for the insurance, buy a manual.
If your parents won't let you buy a manual, either move out and buy a manual, or live with their decision As to whether the 4EAT makes the car no fun to drive, well, I would think so. You can modify the transmission to make it suck less, but that's pricey. Is it going to be your family's only car or something? (i.e. why does it matter that your mom can't drive stick? can't she learn?) |

We already have 3 cars (3 person family, i'm an only child). We have an Explorer, Camry, and Ford Probe . The mom drives the Camry, dad drives the Probe, and I...well...drive the Probe whenever I have a chance. The Explorer=weekend car (bad mileage).
We are trading in the Ford Probe for the new car. Then there will be 3 cars again. However, sometimes my parents swap cars to drive (for ex, if the Camry has a problem, dad brings it to his shop to check it out and mom takes the Probe). I don't want to wait to see if the 07 models will have the new A/T (in addition to their style). |

So.. your mom can't just drive the Explorer if something goes wrong with the Camry?

Guess not.
We just got rid of our '85 BMW 528e, or else I'd be driving a clutch right now. |

dude, buying a wrx with an A/T is retarded. you will so regret it. I cant understand why anyone with all of their limbs would want to drive auto. Take for example the new charger i dont know about in the US, but in Canada it's only offered with an A/T. All that power and no clutch. Its as if they left the top off the glue for to long in the design room...

Tell them that just because the majority of NASIOC members grenade their 5MTs, doesn't mean they are "glass" transmissions, and that you will prove otherwise.

If your parents are paying for the car.... I don't think it's important what you want.

Or strategically mod THE thing that makes it less fast and be good to go. This being specific only to the wrx auto which is a great tranny set up in a really lame ass way. Hopefully the 5eat will trickle down in the next iteration. Until then po folks like me will dream of the great high stall TC in the sky. If your mom needs to be able to drive the car you "purchase" than sounds like your screwed. No offence or anything. |

There are four advantages to a manual transmission;
Fuel economy. If you do an average of 12000 miles a year, that translates to roughly 50 gallons a year. Performance. Better performance and control. Helpfull if you live in a snow belt. Simplicity. A manual transmission is usually more reliable than an auto. "Usually" because a 5k rpm sidestep will blow a manual. Theft deterance. A large number of car thieves are 14-15 and can not drive a stick. That's it. Good luck. |

Performance - eh? The AWD system on the auto WRX is pretty advanced along with being slightly rear biased. Doesn't make it faster, but doesn't hurt either. Simplicity/reliability - As posted in the Transmission FAQ, 97% of transmission related failures are from drivers 16-21.. Theft - OK The best argument is that it's more fun, imho.. and if you're not paying for it, you're screwed, sorry john |

I'm going to pay for the difference of the trade in minus some.
For ex: trade in car value around $7,000, WRX price around $24,000. I will probably pay around $14,000, and parents pay the rest. |
