UOA: 11 WRX, 3296 mi, 5W-30 Castrol Edge Syntec
2011 WRX, 3296 mi on 5W-30 Castrol Edge with Syntec (black bottle).
Looks like I'll be sticking with this oil. FYI first oil change was factory fill. Second oil change was 5W-30 Castrol Edge with Titanium. Funny how the cheaper Syntec stayed in grade better and had a higher flashpoint. Don't believe all the marketing hype.

Nice TBN in your NASCAR 20 weight qualifying oil, but you're probably smart to not to run it much past 3k miles. Good moly level in this stuff and that magnesium is way high! I guess this is to help meet the GF5 requirements for piston cleanliness. I wish GF5 also spec'ed improve wear control. I'll be interested in seeing a trend to see if your wear levels remain the same on this N. American Syntec.

I must've recollected the specs incorrectly. I had recalled that the last spec or two tightened wear control requirements noticeably. Not directly, but by making the test tougher while keeping the wear limit the same. Am I thinking of a different spec? |

care to explain? one guy on a forum vs. a car company full of engineers and hundreds of thousands of Subaru's around the world running 5w30. GO!
You may have had a bad experience but that doesn't mean everyone will. I know guys with early model Subaru's pushing 150k and get their oil changed at quick lube places when every they so happen to remember its time to change their oil. No need to clutter threads up with half (blank) advise that is not properly supported or elaborated on. Not to mention this poor newb just wants to advice as he is probably new to the scene and your just confusing him even more which in turn will make him create a new thread like "what oil weight should i use" and im sure you would love that! |

^^ Can't even start to compare this with most 5W-30's. It's in it's own class. RP

which brings up another point......with SO MANY readily available oils that are SO VASTLY SUPERIOR TO VIRTUALLY EVERY 5W30 that one could buy and use, instead......and suffer NO ill effect what so ever.....and with which you could at LEAST double your oci....which would make BETTER OIL cheaper overall....
why the hell would you want to buy and use inferior oil at all this baffles me to no end |

This comment is not intended to start any arguments or debate wars!
... Shouldn't all these opinions on oils be in the least supported by UOA's? Unless you know all the specific specs and tolerances of your motor how can you properly tell if your car runs best on a particular weight? And if its burning oil or not is a poor answer because that could be a handful of other issues. |

Just posting this for community information. This 5W 30 does work when changed at 3300 mi intervals. No abnormal wear and good TBN. I'll probably switch to 5W 40 Rotella T6 in the summer.

If you still want to go thinner than RT6, there's M1 0W-40 or GC 0W-30. Oil consumption is a mysterious thing and thicker viscosity doesn't always mean less consumption. -Dennis |

If my car was "drinking" any oil, I'd be looking elsewhere for the problem. Moreover, we see temps here down to -10f, and I run T-6 all year. No cold crank issues at all, none.

Although it's heresy to most, RT6 was consumed by my Baja every bit as fast as any 5W30 ever has been. It also DESTROYED my mpg. 'Regular' 10W30s are not consumed so fast in my Baja as RT6 was, and they give distinctly better economy; it (RT6) was very disappointing. So, YMMV.
