Default First car you learned how to drive Manually.

Just out of curiosity, what was your first car that you drove/learned how to drive manual/stick/standard?

How old were you when you learned?

How long have you been driving or have driven stick? For those of you that have been switching back and forth to auto.

My first car that I learned how to drive stick on was my friends moms mk4 jetta tdi 5 speed! It wasn't that bad since they are super torquey...

My friend pretty much randomly was like alright swap seats with me, your going to drive for the next 40 miles. Not the best way for me to learn but it did the trick!

I was 15 when I learned, I am now currently 20, with 5 years of driving standard.

Thought I had posted in here........

You are similar to me......motorcycles from age 10, self taught on a 1969 Jag E Type 4.2L 4MT (my fathers, when he was on business trips) around 16. Drove here and there for a couple years until I moved out.
Yes, later he found out, sorta surprised I lived through that.....
Next was a 1975 Chevy Monza putt putt 4cyl and 4MT (later swapped to a 5MT).
I have had a mix of AT and MT since. Currently still driving my "bought when new" 98 Legacy GT 5MT.

I have driven from 500CC tiny car MT's up to large box trucks and motor homes.

First learned on a '94 Civic coupe with a Frankenstein motor (my second car). I was about 18 (26 now). After I bought it, it sat at home for a week while I lived at school 45 min away. One Friday my dad came to pick me and my gf up to go home for the weekend and he's like "ok you're driving home". I was nervous but had to learn because I bought the damn thing lol. I was able to drive home on the highway and back roads pretty well.

I had done my research ahead of time on how manual trannys work and watched some youtube vids/got help from a friend who drove stick, and it's been second nature ever since, 2 cars later now

61 Rambler American. 3 speed on the tree. Bought it for like $25 from my Chemistry teacher at 16 before I even had a permit. Drove around my yard and down a neighbor's long driveway. Led to my first road car, a 69 MGB 4 speed. Been driving manuals since most on nasioc was not even born.

@ 17 - 69 Mustang Mach 1 with a 390 4 speed ....

My dad threw me the keys and I had to learn by myself in a dirt lot behind a gas station. I've been driving a manual ever since and hate automatics. 34 years later and still love manuals, even in DC stop and go traffic I'd rather drive a stick. I wish my SVX was a manual but the wife cant drive a stick so have to have some autos around for her.

i had a 63 rambler 3 on the tree for a bit....it was a tank...couldnt kill it...all the safety glass was delaminating and it was a pale faded green color with the beer can ejection hatch rusted in the passengers side floorboard.....you could fit a case of 12oz cans in the glovebox..with ice

it met its end on the way to pick up a bag....drove over the 7 sets of railroad tracks down by the IH plant and the motor mounts gave out and the engin dropped and caught and the back end lifted off the ground

I hit reverse quick like only a 17yo can and reversed it off the tracks and into the grass beside the road where it sat until somebody hauled it off....we walked to the d000ds house for the bag and rode the bus back home

A 1990 ford festiva back in 1992. Epically slow, but that car lasted 250k miles on the original clutch after dealing with the abuse of a 16 year old learning stick. Pops taught me how to drive a manual, change the oil, gear oil, wheel bearings, and tune up all on that car.

I learned to drive on a 1984 Toyota Camry with a manual transmission. Yes, those actually exist in the US - I've driven 3 different manual Camrys. Despite the car's poor power and "boring" reputation, it was actually a great car to learn on. The engine just didn't want to stall, but it wasn't powerful enough to cause lots of wheelspin. I was 14 when I first got behind the wheel, but that was in a parking lot and I was a few days from turning 15. I was also already in a driving school. I got my learner's permit the day I turned 15, and for the next year drove that manual Camry almost everywhere I went. The first weekend I had my permit, I drove from San Marcos to Corpus Christi and back, on 123 and 181. I wasn't driving on freeways, yet, but I'd move to the driver's seat as soon as we could get away from a freeway.

Imagine passing on the 2 lane back roads in a manual when you just drove for the first time a weekend ago.

My mother insisted I learn to drive on a manual. No automatic driving until I was comfortable with the stick. Now... I race cars for fun.

Learned on my current car when I was 15. My dad taught me on a back farm road so we wouldn't get in trouble. that means I've been driving my car almost 10 years, wow!
